Hes good at one thing, code. The problem with this is, when hes in charge, shits bad. He hated doom 3's engine. He didnt even want to do it or ship it. In fact, Doom 3's engine is the 4th engine he did JUST for doom 3 and his co-owners told him to stop making engines for id and just focus on making the doom 3 engine and he could fix it later (he never could 'fix' it).
He also doesnt understand what makes games fun. Romero was the perfect yang to his ying. Romero needed someone to tell him to focus and stop coming up with ideas and carmack needs someone to tell him to stop focusing on the tech side and focus on what the game needs to be perfect. Romero was the one who wanted multiplayer, pushed for a net code, pushed for online matches, coined the term deathmatch, frag, etc. He would play with the community daily and kept doom and id in the public eye of the fans and the gaming community (ie, he was a very dedicated community manager 10 years before the job title existed). Carmack fired him for it because he hated multiplayer and felt it was a waste of time, despite being the thing that cemented doom as a must have game. he forced him out by telling the other co-founders it was romero or him (and at the time, the engines where HUGE for id, so bye bye romero).
He also did it with hall a small bit before he pulled it with romero. Hall was promised another keen game (his project and his passion), but was forced to do shit for doom because carmack outright told him he didnt feel like doing another keen so id would never would. Hall said he was promised it, and before the co-owners could side with him (you know, based on his word), he told em his engines and code leave with him, and without him there was no keen or doom, and if they didnt vote hall out, he was gone.

Where are you getting this from? ETQW was licensed out to Splash Damage, who wanted to release another game inside the (very successful) Enemy Territory formula (which they're still seemingly very fond of, see Brink and Dirty Bomb) but lacked an engine to do it. They were also experienced with id's tech. It was a sensical move that left id free to work on their own projects. ETQW is a fucking great game too, it wasn't bigger solely because COD4 cockblocked it
