I actually liked Super Paper Mario. It had a lot of stupid funny moments like this one.

Do you think Nintendo will EVER go back to the RPG mechanics of the first two games?
>>
>>336905996
just depends on if the series survives long enough to switch off to someone that isn't that one dude. also depends on the state of M&L
>>
>>336905996
Super paper Mario was one of my first wii games and teen me thought the story was pretty great for a Mario game. Super comfy.
>>
>>336905996
Personally I wish They would have made Super Paper Mario its own series and also made the turn based ones for the main line.

Probably not.
Even after Color Trash terribible reception, they'll just start pushing some other retarded gimmick.
>>
>>336906114
I believe that M&L and Paper Mario can co-exist peacefully, M&L is the portable rpg and Paper Mario is the console rpg.
>>
>>336903925
Man Paper Peach is just the sassiest little cutie. Even in video games 2D are better than 3D.
>>
But OP that's why Super Paper Mario is so hated!
>>
>>336906685
Also the partner for that area wasn't quite as fun as the others. She was alright, but she wasn't as fun as Goombario or Bow.
>>
>>336908106
Why have people decided Color Splash is terrible already? SPM was fun even though it was gimmick based shit.
>>
>>336910896
Because SPM had its writing and original characters steal the show.

Color Splash will be yet another Paper Mario title that doesn't have either of these things.
>>
Was there a release date/window for Color Splash? Genuinely curious about this E3. Not for the games they're going to deliver and announce but how they'll behave to the constant backlash over almost every game they're releasing... A full fledged Paper Mario trailer would go a long way
>>
>>336911182
Wasn't almost every original character in SPM just a geometric shape. I remember all of them being extremely bad and boring.

Because it's literally Sticker Star 2, from the gameplay to the generic Toads NPCs.
>>
>>336905996

the gameplay in SPM was ass but I give it a pass for having the best writing and storyline in the series

Sticker Star had both the worst gameplay AND the worst story, and the new one on the Wii U looks more or less the same

Undertale stole everything. Character designs, settings, music, you name it.
>>
>>336911508
Geometric shapes was that weird dimension's visual style. Regardless of how they looked, there were still lots of interesting characters.

Besides, I'd rather have ever character be a different shape over every character being the same Toad.

>head in the middle starts spinning around

>>
>>336911909
Let's not go overboard, Super Paper Mario had a small handful of actually interesting characters. Most of them were totally forgettable. The game just put those more interesting characters in prominent roles so they made up for the majority of the cast being so dull.
>>
>>336908106
Why does it seem that Nintendo is totally tone deaf to its fans? I'm a diehard Nintendo fan, but even I'm getting tired of their shit recently. Between Paper Mario, Star Fox Zero, only Zelda at E3, telling us that we should like Federation Force instead of making a real Metroid game, and Miyamoto being worshipped as a god within the company despite his creativity being dry for over a decade, I'm really fed up with their shit. If the NX is garbage, that might be the last straw for me.
>>
>>336911681
All of those were uninteresting characters with nothing going for them story-wise though. Well, Bleck had some shit at least.
>>
>>336912618
Maybe because a lot of their fans are whiny brats who complain about not getting their way more than any arguments about quality or interesting products.

And then a lot are kids too.

>>
>>336912878
It had a couple fantastic characters, but you can count them on your fingers. It had a ton of characters that nobody ever cared about on the same side, people just don't remember those bits because well, they weren't memorable.
>>
>>336908106

>>
>>336912618
I'm only gonna buy NX when I see:
a metroid game that isn't shit
and a 3D Mario that's not 3DWorld 2 or something equally lazy
Otherwhise I'm done with Nintendo home consoles.
>>
>>336913004
It had more interesting character than most games. Of course there's going to be some NPCs meant for filling the world, that's how games work. And even then a lot of these NPCs had pretty good dialog.
>>
>>336913048
I actually really liked 3D World. A new collectathon Mario would be nice, though.
>>
>>336912878
Super Paper Mario's primary cast (Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Tippi and Peach) are fun. The major villains vary from okay (Bleck, Dimentio) to great (O'Chunks, Mimi.) But in terms of supporting and tertiary cast? Francis is the ONLY one that stands out at all. The rest of the game is boring nobodies you completely forget about the second they leave the screen. Compared to Paper Mario and TTYD, it's an absolute downgrade.
>>
>>336910896

>all that collecting bullshit just for the only level with somewhat challenge

>>
>>336912618
Nintendo's target audience has always been kids and since they Wii they have added casual adults to it. Neckbeards were never their audience, yet they constantly cry about Nintendo not catering to them for some reason.

Nintendo doesn't care about Mario lore or anything most "Nintendo fans" would care about, they just want to make colorful games with responsive gameplay and new gimmicks for the kids and possibly their parents to enjoy. That's it.

>>
>>336913332
Nintendo literally said "We really want to appeal to the Hardcore audience again" when they unveiled the Wii U. They got people's hopes up by saying that. They should be surprised when people are let down.
>>
>>336913271
Tropical Freeze was so superior to 3DW it wasn't even funny.
It's like Nintendo really gave up on making memorable games.
>>
>>336913447
Luvbi is practically my primary example of the NPCs being mostly forgettable.

You're right, I forgot about Squirps. I guess we can count him too.
>>
>>336903810

>>
>>336913479
Well compared to the Wii it is arguably more hardcore. They got games like Wonderful 101 and Bayonbeta 2 made, for the Wii U.
>>
>>336913332
It always was but they used to be brutal and had a lot of stuff for older people to enjoy.
They also had F-zero and Metroid that are not kid friendly.(I'd also argue that Pikmin is not for kids)
Yea the wii U got 2 P* games that are good but they're not from nintendo.
All that's left is donkey kong
>>
>>336912618
I think the success of the Wii basically taught them that they shouldn't listen to hardcores and that gimmicks are awesome and the smallfolk love them.

Problem is the Wii honeymoon is over and the divorce papers were filed ages ago.
>>
>>336913479
They did but I think Xenoblade X is the only first party title that can be argued to not be a kid or casual game. It's more of a teen+ one.
>>
>>336911678

Then you should find a better example. I don't know what you have against SPM characters but your argument basically boils down to, "the characters are good but there's not enough so they're actually bad. Also those good character I forgot to mention don't count because I say so."

Later tracks in the game in particular aren't just about winning, you need to fucking not die too. Also the story mode is ridiculously challenging.

They still have that humor. It's just currently repressed.

Like in Mario and Luigi Dream team. There was no amusing dialog like this at all. but the monsters would fuck with you in all sorts of hilarious ways.

And the mountain chapter had a bunch of statues dedicated to guys who lift, and that was hilarious. It was only like, 5-6 statues in 1 chapter, but it was hilarious and the same humor as the old paper mario games.

So it's there, but cash is what everything comes down to. Those great dialogs and jokes didn't sell. why should they invest in it?

Super Paper Mario is the best selling one by more than 2 millions.
>>
>>336912618

All of Nintendo's greatest games were released on the gamecube.

Which sold horribly.

So, as a business, they realized, quality single player experiences don't sell. They need to follow the market.

So they made games like Splatoon and Mario Maker. Which are great for the genres they are. But they aren't single player experiences like Metroid Prime or Paper Mario.

I must be the only one who doesn't care about a new Paper Mario RPG. The original was great, the sequel did some solid improvements to mechanics but overall felt like a rehash in most ways and hat hit&miss chapter quality, a third one would be pushing it. I'm glad they took a different route but that doesn't mean I'm not mad they did such a shit job with it.

Take into account the other games.
64 has the koopa bros as some of the most memorable villians, Tubba Bubba is quite good too and Jr. as much as I hate him, is well made. For the supporting cast you got Kolorado as one of the best characters, the master is probably the coolest bonus boss, gourmet guy, Bootler, Moustafa, Quizmo dude, Twink. For TTYD you got Doopliss, the Sirens, hooktail, lord crump and sir grodus as villians. Then you get characters such as Cortez, Hawk Rawk, Pennington, general white, Flavio. And that's not mentioning how partners > pixies
>>
>>336915534
This game was fucking shit. I was excited for it. I mean Paper Fucking Mario in an actual RPG again but then it was a very much M&L game with Paper Mario just as an addon. All the Toad gathering segments were SHIT BORING too. The only good thing about the game was boss fights. The papercraft fights were really boring and unimaginative after the giant battles from Dream Team which were easily the highlight.

Paper Mario 64 and Ten Thousand Year Door has oodles of good characters. Super Paper Mario has about ten. Those ten are very good, but a game as big as Paper Mario needs more than ten, especially when most of the game is going new (mostly uninteresting) places and meeting new (mostly uninteresting) people. It's an absolutely valid criticism that most of the cast is forgettable, even if there are some diamonds in the rough.

>>
>>336914120
yes it's hard. But there are advanced techniques in the game which take away a lot of the difficulty. I got stuck in chapter 8 i think. In that 1v1 race, the one before the last in other words. I then learned how to do that Slide drifting (?) forgot how it's called. Where you turn right, press the L shoulder button (the opposite from the direction you're turning) And softly press the right one and adjust it by pressing harder and softer real quick. I never quite learned snakeing cause it wasnt necessary.
I sperged out again, sorry. My point being, yeah, it's a hard game if you try to play it by the book. It needs research which, nobody is willing to do these days. The immense satisfaction i felt after beating the story mode, is simply unrivaled. I know challenging games arent a nintendk thing anymore, or never where i guess, but i hate how every single newer nintendo game of X ip has become so pathetically shallow and simply not fun. F-zero gx is one of the very few games that could be considered perfect.
I guess i am no longer nintendos target audience.
