IN THE BEGINNING, there were chaos androids.
In time, things passed, and the androids were rewritten as lifeless terminators working for powerful and evil space demigods called the C'Tan. I'd say this one makes more sense. I would even say the IG and the blood ravens never even fought (I think). Blood ravens were probably wiped out trying to stop both chaos and the necrons. IG was probably focused more against the Dark Eldar, chaos, and the Orks. Eldar was probably focused on the Necrons.
The biggest problem with 3e crons was how blatantly they tried to ape the established factions. They weren't going to just fit into the setting no they had to be the fucking big boys on the block.
Suddenly everything in the game was connected to them, they had history with all the past factions and were like super cerealy as big a threat as chaos (PFFFFT). The WD articles at the time droned on and on comparing the C'tan to the Chaos gods (the chaos gods are like... gods of the immaterium. So what if the C;tan have like... MATERIUM POWERS??). It was sloppy and terrible. The two prominent C'tan themselves were just lamer versions of Khorne and Cegorach. And the trouble was these two boring characters were all the codex was really all about. It wasn't codex necrons it was codex: C'tan whipping boys. Say what you will about Tau feeling shoved into the setting but at least they didn't try to take center stage while they did it.
Thankfully newcrons dialed it back.

Right now the only real shakeup in the WH40k universe hinges on The Emporer dying on the golden throne and what might happen next. He could either just die for real, in which case the Astronomicon stops working and the Imperium loses warp travel ability, and let's not forget the chaos warp gate behind the throne that was being held closed by his will. He could alternatively be reborn anew and kerbstomp the galaxy, maybe even with bonus new god powers, this would also affect the Imperium's relationship with Mars significantly.

This is not completely true, though. The development of their long distance space travel technology hinged on the fact that they discovered a warp drive.
It's doubtful they know all (or even most) of the details, but they are definitely aware of the existence of an alternate dimension.
