For me it seems like all horror games immediately lose their magic when you get killed. Penumbra/Amnesia, Outlast, and other games like that prey on fear of the unknown. Once you die, that goes away. Silent Hill on the other hand still scares me to this day, because it brings out our more primal fears. So I guess just go for more psychological horror.

I liked silent hill because there were almost no jump scares.
You almost always knew in advance that monsters were near because of the radio noise.
Honestly, the radio noise is a big part of what made SH scary to me.

All of these indie shit horror games tell their entire story through notes and audiologs which makes it difficult to give a shit about what's happening. It also means the bulk of the story has to already have occurred and that the events of the game are basically the third act.

Fatal Frame takes places in abandoned run down areas. Silent Hill and Condemned also had these kind of areas

That's pretty retarded. For me, the best horror always has a clear descent into madness. Something like Kill List comes to mind.

>>336842215
I think it would. I'm imagining this like a vertical Snowpiercer with different gangs occuping different floors and the atmosphere changing radically as you make your way down. Maybe a lot more surreal. Everything has been converted into a living area, you walk through people's shit, pass next to people taking a bath right in the middle of a hallways, climb down abandoned elevator shafts, people get inexplicably scared or outright hostile if they learn you're trying to go down, some force or organization is trying to keep you upstairs. The few times you see outside everything is dark and stormy and you can just barely see other towers just like yours stretching upwards and downwards as far as the eye can see.

Instead of relying on jump scares, a good horror game should make you want to turn your head away from the screen. You should be legitimately scared at losing or dying. Punishing death with a gruesome death animation does this the best.

You owe it to yourself to play them all.

It's the only series with no bad entries.

The original 3 on PS2 are classics. 4 and the remake of 2 are some of the best games on Wii. 5 was amazing. Spirit Camera was great as a tech demo, and anyone with a spare $5 needs to at least try it out (would have made an awful full price game though.)

The manga, the book and the movie are all very, very good too. I'd put the film up there as the best video game movie. But i'm the kind of person that loved the Forbidden Siren movie so what the fuck do I know.

>the movie are all very, very good too. I'd put the film up there as the best video game movie.

I love the game series but the movie is fucking awful.

It's a Fatal Frame movie in name only. The camera, the one consistent thing in the series, barely even gets a nod in the film. It's just a dull film about about a curse of lesbianism amongst high school girls. It's as if the took the script to an unrelated bad porn film, cut out all the porn and just slapped the Fatal Frame name on it. It's not interesting, it's not scary, it's not well made, it's just plain shit.

IE there are four divisions of the game, if you go through the game without dieing, you stay and can beat the game in Route A. If you die once you start Route B, all the way to Route D. If you die in Route D the game crashes and never works again
>>

No. It's quite possibly one of the most frustrating games ever made. You won't be scared, you'll just be annoyed.

If you are going to play any Siren game then play the remake on the PS3, stay away from the PS2 games.

Reminded me of this for some reason that I saw earlier during the WWI threads. I'd like to see a WWI horror game where your protag slowly goes insane over the course of the war and begins to see enemies and allies alike as increasingly horribly monsters.

Pathologic

The one of rare cases of survival horror done right.
You are in a city that is slowly going to hell due to disease and inner strife and you try to save people you care about.
Happens in more or less real time so you have to decide between trying to scrounge up resources or try to finish side quests that might improve your chances.
And meanwhile two other heroes are going through their story making their choices fucking shit up for you.

Also made by russians in early 00s so filled with depression and hopelessness

>What's the difference between the PS2 and the wii version of 2?

Everything. Complete ground up remake with new graphics, camera, controls, music, voice acting, new endings, costumes, gameplay mechanics.

>Is the wii version of 2 even translated?
Yes, good luck finding a physical copy though because it was extremely limited print.

>Are the levels of the other games as comfy as 5's?
2 will scratch the same itch since it's set in a haunted mountain village. I personally preferred 3's Manor of Sleep, myself. Some people place Project Zero 2 as the "silent hill 2" of the series.

This is High-Rise except in reverse. The book I mean, no idea what the movie did with it.

>power is out everywhere
>packs of feral dogs roam the corridors
>the rich on the top floors have barricaded themselves in and live like renaissance royalty
>mobs of poorer folk in the lower levels clearing out rooms and setting up base camps
>people constantly trying to get higher and higher for unexplainable primal reasons
>cannibalistic "tribes" of women

I dunno if it's really horror so much as survival but it's a cool concept. You'd need either brilliant AI or to code a shitton of NPC behaviours and personalities. It'd be a game that's made or broken on the quality of the other people in the world/building/tower.

>Some people place Project Zero 2 as the "silent hill 2" of the series.

I've never agreed with this. I suspect the only reason people put Project Zero 2 at the top of their list is because it has the "saddest" endings of all the games and for some reason I don't understand there's a lot people who think "sad end = better writing".

I don't really think there is a Fatal Frame that shines above the rest, the series has been amazingly consistent.

Nah, no raptors, most of the threat was really just the isolation and paranoia that troops developed that gets exacerbated from an unknown threat. I think if a game has that as its setting, it could end up really interesting with a lot of heavy atmosphere.

There are some things he didn't mention, like the new voice acting being way worse than the original voice acting, the new gameplay mechanics making the game significantly easier than the original release and the camera controls being not very good.

Both versions have issues, there is no "definitive" version. Just play whatever you can get your hands on.

>The camera, the one consistent thing in the series, barely even gets a nod in the film.

Now hold up a minute playa. Let ya boy holla at ya. I know what yer thinkin': "how can fatal frame be fatal frame wit' no camera obscura?"

Well shit son, I thought that too. But then I gots me ta thinkin', and I had one of them there epiphanies.

See, we all love that fuckin' camera. It's unique an' shit. Well, 'cept when DreadOut ripped it the fuck off. But that ol' picture takin' machine? It ain't done dick in the whole fuckin' series.

Fatal Frame 1? Was a fuckin' mirror and some bitch into some crazy ass bondage that saved the motherfuckin' day.

Fatal Frame 2? Didn't nothin' save that day except for the warm hands of a twin sister's hands around her bitch twins throat. She dun' strangled dat hoe.

Fatal Frame 3? Bitch woke up after a good nights sleep after findin' that tattoed slut some fresh Asian dick to ride on a boat with.

Fatal Frame 5? That shit ended with a HUG. Like seriously. "I forgive you for being such an evil bitch, now gimmie dem sins."

Spirit Camera? Your camera didn't do shit. The day was saved after introducin' a bitch to her imagery self she created out of boredom, a lack of dick, and the imminent arrival of a sewing needle and an old bitch that was down with the lord.

Even in gameplay. You think you're hot shit excorsisin' on dem ghosts. But then later on in the level they always come back and be all SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKA, BET WE SPOOKED YOU GOOD HUH?

Camera has one fuckin' job: Kill ghosts. 5 games and a few spin offs later and it ain't done that shit once. No wonder the film reduced it to a plot device and brought in them sweet, sweet yellow muff divers, knowhataymsayan?

>Even in gameplay. You think you're hot shit excorsisin' on dem ghosts. But then later on in the level they always come back and be all SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKA, BET WE SPOOKED YOU GOOD HUH?

It kind of went away in the later games but originally the camera is exorcising ghosts, it's just the way the game was developed you had to reach certain points in the story before you were allowed to exorcise certain ghosts. After you reach that point and kill that ghost though, it was never coming back.

The camera is iconic to the series, it's the only consistency across all the games and it was barely in the film and was of no consequence. Besides, even if I ignore that it doesn't change the fact that the movie is shit.

if you are like me, the game will require a lot of experimentation. that, i think, is just ice-pick lodge's style, and i really like it that way. it requires you to really get into the mindset of your character and really look at the world and the people in it. and it's very rewarding to do so.
i played the game a lot without getting very far, restarting from the first day a bunch of times, then i finally "got it" and could continue further into the game. it's funny because after that point of "getting it", the game just felt much more natural to play. it became a comfier overall experience, though at the same time still very tense, strange and disturbing.

This is the horror game I'd like to play, but developers are too stupid to create. Just establish a spooky, claustrophobic environment (in this case an abandoned building complex) and fill it with all sorts of insane psychological horror, from ghosts, through body horror, to phobias-based crap - but NEVER devolving into screamers territory or Penumbra-style hide and seek monster gimmicks. Just a content tourist game of horror.

Now there's a fucking walking simulator I'd play.

>Limited Run Games, the genius publishers who bring the American market new limited runs of both indie games and high demand games that did not see an American release have hinted that they are trying to work out a deal with Nintendo to bring Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Blackwater to American players in physical format. While the team usually handles PlayStation titles, they are happy to work with other platforms – just don’t expect the games to be changed for physical distribution. They’ve clarified that this would be a distribution deal for a physical version of the available digital game for Wii-U, and that they are aiming for 10,000 copies. Should this deal go through, pre-orders are bound to sell quickly through their website.

Why do a lot of people hate jump scares?

I don't find any horror setting or atmosphere scary the only thing scaring me is the anticipation to another jump scare.

If there are no jumpscares then I wouldn't even consider it a horror game.

Case and point. You should start playing real horror games.
>>
>>336851771
I don't think it's the jump scare itself, but the overuse or overly long set ups.

If you know a jump scare is going to come, what with shadows moving around or that music sting, it's not going to scare you. Startle you, sure, but not scare.

However, I'd say a good horror game would have a nice balance between them. Especially if they continually set up really dump looking jump scares that don't do anything only to throw something actually threatening at you with no warning or cue.

I'd also say you can have a horror game without a jump scare but would need good atmosphere to make the player worried and nervous about what's around every corner.
>>
>>336851771

Jump scares are bad because they're "cheap" horror.

99% of the time you flash a scary image and a loud sound, people are going to react. It's isnt even real horror, just surprise.

Real horror is basically what you meant by "the anticipation to another jump scare"

Personally, I can play though jump scare games without hassle. Games with long segments of darkness and silence, combined with tense atmosphere makes a good horror game IMHO.

Then again, maybe some people just prefer fright to dread.

I want a horror game about slowly losing your sanity.

Like the first part of the game is you finding out you have a brain tumor.

Then slowly the game starts creeping up the hallucinations. At the start it's just cellphones going off or cars honking.

But then you hallucinate things like your wife cheating behind your back and your daughter shit talking you.

And the game never really tells you what's real and hallucination. You get more paranoid about what's real or not.
