Looker Bureau in XY was pretty good. I really enjoyed that. I felt ORAS did a good job of improving the basic RS plot and characters too, other than the shittastic Delta Episode.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 1 and 2 have simple but well executed stories with a fantastic soundtrack to boot.
The majority of the game is cheery and lighthearted, but that just makes the sucker punch moments more powerful. The first half of the game is innocent children's adventures, and then the rest is a rollercoaster of plot twists, character reveals and tested friendships. So people were understandably shocked, and I think that's what left such a significant impression on them.
I didn't play 3 and 4 is more is more flawed in story, but has refined the gameplay to its best state.

Well simple. When I was a kid, I wanted PMD because of all the advertisements about it. The idea of being an Pokemon really appealed to me. Back then, I though I got an simple game where I could be the Pokemon for a change. I didn't expect the games to have the story they have, so I was really surprised by that.
Then when I got Explorers, it was almost everything the first game had but better, surprising me again. The PMD games are pretty much my first exposure to a story heavy RPG, and so they are special to me.
Even now, I can get back to the PMD games and enjoy them. I'm not ashamed to say that they are among my favorite if not my favorite games of all time. I bought Gates to Infinity Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon as well, and enjoy(ed) them a lot.
