It works if the redesign or alternative art style has as much effort and care put into it as the original like pic related.
However what happens is corporate cash grabbers will try to change a character to "keep up with times" so you get a rushed update that had far less thought put into it than the original.

Sonic has had so many minor changes to his 1998 design that I can't even count them, but the very first rendition of it from SA1 and the designs from '06 and Boom are really the only bad ones. Anyway, I think his Classic design and SA2/GBA/DS design are great, but never look as good when they're transformed into 3D models.

Regardless of whatever characters get bad redesigns, to me Spyro will always be the one that got it the worst.
Well, except for Bomberman that one time, but at least in that case the devs knew how bad it was and immediately abandoned it. Spyro's redesign is now just his standard design and he's never going back to normal.
