I remember we were having a lot of problems some time ago when trying to make it work with a game on /emugen/. Personally I couldn't even get it to display moonspeak properly. Ultimately MAME seemed more reliable but still primitive.
I see the guy is still working on it, so there's hope I guess.
MAME should also be the current best emulator for x68k, but I've never tried the alternatives so I can't speak personally.

But you forget that there was still a de facto general style in 90's anime, just like there is today. Whether it's superior or not is a matter of taste, but I personally prefer what was rather than what is. "Nostalgia" is a wonderful word to throw around when talking about the positives of the past, but I find it rather vague and meaningless.

I'm not an expert at all, but just looking at the stats I see that the top of the line 1986 PC98 had an 8 MHz CPU and did 640x400 with 16 simultaneous colours, while in the '90s they were running a 386 and 256 colours. Both of these blow the most common gaming machines of the time, NES and SNES, out of the water.
The X68k was somewhere on the same line, while the FMTowns was even more powerful, so I don't see how you can say that.
Of course, they were probably ridiculously expensive, but that's another story.

Those remake designs lack pixel dithering. It does bug me a bit about how the shading makes the characters look just a bit too different with the close skin outlines on the chin.
I can get the intention to update the designs with the remake. Without the black skin tone, Eriko's design looks like fanart for an edgy modern made character.

When they realized that people only watched anime for the girls. Then they focused exclusively on girls, but the art and animation budget was too high still, so they made concessions when needed. They realized you could have stick figures, it would still sell but the profit margin was exponentially greater. Then they turned anime into a marketing vehicle, to advertise the characters and their respective merchandising, not unlike how 80s cartoons were glorified toy commercials.

I like the 90's style of anime but I'm not going to pretend it's better than what exists now. The constant deformation of characters for the sake of exaggerated emotions got old really fast.
I miss all the edgy anime though. Wicked City, Devil Man, Genocyber and all that.

I agree that the massively exaggerated proportions could be a bit hard to swallow, but I also find that the pure detail put into those very massively exaggerated characters was, in simple words, unmatched, even to this day.
It's like looking at a fine piece of architecture from the past. Or a whole town for that matter. While it may seem over-the-top and unnecessary to have so many ornaments on every single building, it's yet so very beautiful.
