Well I haven't like a Battlefield since Bad Company 2 and even then the last properly good one was 2142, so the fact that Battlefield 3 on has basically been map packs means it's been a downward slope for me.
My brother and I were talking about it earlier and he mentioned that there's not engineer class in the game which leads me to believe vehicles are just powerups like in Battlefront, so it's hardly even Battlefield anymore at this point.
This coming from the guy who loves WW1-WW2 weaponry and was honestly kinda happy when they said they were making a WW1 Battlefield. Then they named it and showed it off, and thats where I got off.
Because people want a World War I that actually treats the event with some reverence and respect instead of using it at a fucking opportunity to spin some positive PR about how progressive your organisation is.

Sure, the tantrum and the backlash are out of proportion, and yes, most of people involved in it are morons. But the decision itself is not clever and people are not entirely wrong about finding it, to say the least, distasteful.
I don't really know, or frankly care how much liberties the game will take with the historical settings. Judging from the trailer, it seems like they sure as hell don't go for particularly realistic approach, which in terms of gameplay and visual aesthetics actually might not be a bad thing. And personally, I find the very idea of visiting WW1 in a tripleA title very refreshing and I'm happy about it.
It's a question whenever the stupid choice of a black guy for cover is just a publicity stunt, or if they seriously intend to do some big historical revisionism. We'll have to wait and see for that.

If you instead focus on less relevant aspects of the theme, and if you do so under a key that has political basis: so for an instead, you spend disproportionate amount of focus on fighting women and blacks than you spend on those who actually carried the absolute MAJORITY of the burden of the war, you are creating a misrepresentation of the historical subject. And you are doing it because (and the developer flat out admitted that) you have a political goal: change the way people view female and black characters in stories today. That is manipulative, it uses history and twists it towards a certain political goal. It misrepresents the real events, creates false impression (simply by giving the absolute niche aspects of them more space than the core and most important ones).

I don't think it's a problem. It's not representative of any conspiracy of racial hatred, it's obviously just related to the nature of producing commercial media to sell towards the most valuable target markets.
If you look at Indian telivision and film, non-Indian minorities are heavily underrepresented. When they do appear, they're heavily simplified caricatures revolving around a small set of the same archetypes. Similarly, Turkish media is consumed across the middle east, yet features almost exclusively turkish actors. It's not a problem.
There's no conspiracy behind it to keep the minorities down, it's just obvious that they're going to invest in the largest market and grab whatever sales they can for the same product for the much smaller minority groups. Developing a niche product catering directly to each specific minority proportional to their population isn't a profitable way to run entertainment.

I misread you. My point is that there isn't nearly enough stories about the actual RELEVANT parts of WW1 history for us to justify focusing on the irrelevant or flat out fictional sides of it.
As people had already pointed out: There were many far more relevant aspects, like the involvement of Indians, the Russian all-female battalions, the white feathers etc... that could be explored.
So why the the black people, why the banshee beduin woman? The answer is: because those fit the intentions of current ideological currents and interests. Not because of them really being interesting and relevant in the perspective of WW1 events.

I think that's a deliberate move on their part. Any time a new wave of shooters begins whether WWII or modern warfare the talk of "fatigue" comes up. They're clearly trying to bring as much variety as they can to something people see as one thing (namely dirt and trenches). Seems more like a marketing move than political one. People feel like they've seen plenty WWII games and that WWI doesn't suit the genre as much but Dice are trying to prove them wrong. And hope that with more variety there's a wider group of people it can appeal to.
