No, they didnt pay for it. Not directly at least, that would lead to corruption instantly being uncovered and the whole thing would fall apart.
Gaming Media isnt *technically* corrupt, but they are stuck in a place where everything they do has to be carefully done to make sure they dont piss anyone off, because if publishers see that a site i(or personal reviewer) is not helping sales or generating hype they can just not give them a copy early, or stop invinting them to excelsive events. Without early or exclsuive content readers will just go elsewhere to the sites that do have it.
And they dont want to upset fans, going against the public perception is a big no-no, its much bettter to confirm what people wanted to hear than to challange pre-concieved notions about a game. Wonder why Mad Max was the only open world game to be critisised for the same shit every open world game has? Because it had very little hype around it, and those were the opinions that were most prevelent.
They are also very lazy, they wernt forced or even told to use those specific words, but its sooooo much easier to describe a game in the way its already described than make up your own, especially if its cloese enough to how they feel.
ENB (the Dark Souls youtube guy) has a good video on this, he used to work in the industry and still gets press-release emails. Journalists use the exact termanology given to them in these emails, its not corruption, they are free to say whatever they want, but it takes less effort and keeps everyone happy if you just repeat what was in the press-release.
Same with e3 interviews and stuff. I noticed this while looking up as much footage for Battleborn as I could. EVERY SINGLE INTERVIEW asked the same questions, it was like clockwork, and Gearbox had good answers and nothing made it look bad or showed any faults about the game. Again, no one is forced to do anything, but everyone is just super cozy with eachother and doing as little work as possible.

But if there is any pressure from the publisher on reviewers it lies in the ability to withhold review copies, which are the games journalists' livelihoods. So you see, nothing has to be made explicit, but journalists are probably continually aware of having to tread a line.
I really doubt anything so crass and openly corrupt as paying for reviews goes on. Especially across multiple publications. Only one of them has to squeal to blow the whole case wide open.
