The story behind Ciel No Surge and it's continuation is pretty interesting to me. I've absorbed spoilers for that series like an amoeba.

The general consensus tends to be 2 > 1 > 3, 3 just has more to it than just the battle system going against it that the combat system in 1 is rarely ever brought up or compared.
The biggest thing 3 has going for it are the hymmnos songs, especially so since several of them are (in my opinion) best in the series. Only counting ingame tracks.

I actually forgot she sang Arphage (one f the best songs from AT3 in general if not the best). Still doesn't change my opinion on her as a character since Hymmnos songs are (generally) really good and their performance tends to vastly outdo the characters as a whole.

And honestly, despite the misgivings the heroines and battle system give, AT3 actually had a better story than AT1 (not as much as AT2 though), and it also served to include in-game several setting concepts and explanations that until that point had only been relegated to the setting books and the Ar Portal columns, like the SH Servers, the Triangular Nuclear Loops, what happens to a Beta-type Reyvateil when they die, and according to Tsuchiya, the way the music works in battle is the closest approach they have ever made to how the Reyvateils' songs are supposed to work in-universe, as well as finally showing what Ar Ciel's surface looked like during the 700 years the Sea of Death existed over it; while AT1 has several contradictions with its own lore due to several things still being in development. That said, it also gives a very nasty ending for those players who decided to settle down for the bad and normal endings in AT1, and that didn't want to finish AT3 with one of the true endings (Ar Ciel dies the following year, everyone from the three games die, pretty much meaning everything these players did was in vain).

Well, like the turn-based system in AT1, the action-based system in AT3 was all about charging up your reyvateil, and disrupting your opponent's special attacks. And added a little bit of herding you opponents to fit into whatever bizarre shapes the song magic attacked. The details of fighting that were illustrated with the first battle with Mute you could pretty much ignore thereafter.

Oh I'm not one dissing on AT3 story, if anything I felt it was a decent conclusion to the trilogy and explained some things better than the previous games but in standard NISA method you could tell there was a lot missing/forgotten and the last prat of the game gets somewhat rushed because the game focuses so much on the reyvateil matriarchy rather than the actual plan to save the world (of course assuming you didn't fuck up and get bad end).
