I dont really remember how religion was in Civ 4, but I'm really enjoying it in 5. I like that you need to invest production to get the buildings that make it, but you get bonuses form it, and that you can spread it aggressively.

Fell in love with it playing Civ2 on a demo computer at CompUSA of all places. Really got into it then, bought Civ3 fresh off the shelves and was ridiculously disapointed, never bought a civ game on release since.
Still haven't played CiV, I really liked Civ 4 as far as the general gameplay and soundtrack, but the combat side of that game prevents me from replaying it (looking back I think Civ3 had the best combat, it was too bad after the first couple patches they locked and capped so much of what you could mod in that game).
Except for lack of borders, I think Civilization: Call To Power is the best game of that type (that was another franchise from Activision based on the old board game trademark IIRC, and wasn't connected to Sid Meier).
