Once you get the hang of the blocking it actually feels pretty good, I'm not going to deny it isnt more that mediocre at best and the framerate can drop to shit tier.
But I loved the game, just make sure you have the jap audio if you understand a bit of Jap. The english dub failed to capture her character correctly and instead made her act like she was constipated for the whole game.

Not really. Feels like a low budget hack and slash in all the games.
Atmosphere, music, plot, weirdness, and tragedy carry the games really well though. Partly the reason whyDrakengard 2was badly received was because it had a happier ending than Drakengard 1.
Also really cool to see a game with a child molester, baby eating elf, and racist priest become your colleagues. The games are pretty grimdark if not edgy.

If it's only the gameplay that's turning you off then sure. If you go into D1 or D3 expecting story and characters similar to Nier you probably won't like it. All 3 of Taro's games vary a lot in terms of tone. There's still plenty of suffering though.

The Night of the Hunter has a very surreal vibe to me that's like a film version of that.
It's something to do with fog from those games, the way the mobs have a very limited set of movements, the dialogue being very stilted and strange. I've never pinpointed it exactly.

Music was fine 90% of the time, only one or two were annoying, and mostly because of personal pet peves (like that one track that sounded like it was skipping because of missing data though it was part of the song, think in the level with the first rock golem)

It's really not that slow, only when you have a slow unleavened weapon, when you've got a decent one leveled up it feels fairly fast, rarely even got touched by enemies. Could have used some sort of air dash though.

Hey I was just playing Drakengard 1 yesterday night, in anticipation of playing this.
I think I got to the 5th mission or something. Combat is pretty basic, and the dragon controls were very irritating at first (until you learn how to 180). Pretty okay game so far. I saw videos for Drakengard 3 (in dub) that cracked me the fuck up, it seems like it has a much more different tone than Drakengard 1 at least. This game has been pretty dark so far.
