Well, it's got squid loli's obviously, it's got frenetic, fast-paced gameplay, a variety of modes, a unique control scheme, an even more unique method of movement and cover and it's got a multitude of different weapons that are all pretty balanced after lots of patching.
It's also able to have a reason for players to come back to it
Like the rotating maps. As dumb as that sounds you can just come back whenever your favorite map is on.
And let's not forget Splatfests. Those are a huge deal.

I should go back playing Splatoon during the summer. The one thing that made me stop playing is that God-awful ranking system. Why can't I be ranked as an individual instead of a team? That sole reason made me real pissy every match because I always blamed the team out of anger instead of my own inadequacies. We definitely need a netcode overhaul. The way it works currently is that the chosen host (the one at the top of the player list in the lobby) gets the server advantage. That means if the host is in Japan, good luck ever getting a shot on him without at least getting killed too since the latency always works in their favor. It's really stupid.
I'm on the west coast so I always end up with the Japanese. For some reason whenever I end up trying to play with Americans or Europeans I end up disconnecting. Truly sucks.

But yeah, catching people on just the tip of your range and splatting them with the hydra is amazing.
I fell in love with the weapon when I figured that out and also that time I barely held down the trigger just long enough to splat a Tentatek that was in my face.
Even though it doesn't have as much range, I love doing that with the Custom Dual Squelcher as well. I could never get the hang of the Jet though even after it's been buffed.

The Echo Locator is great, but you're most likely not gonna use the bombs.
I'd say that would be more tactical rush type setup.
The Custom Hydra is for more cautionary situations. You can use the sprinkler to trick others into think there is someone near by putting it around a corner or on a high roof. The shield is good charging and then unleashing it when the other team thinks they've got you.
