I think turn-based combat had much less to do with Final Fantasy becoming popular than them doing new and interesting things within the genre did. No offense but I don't think the turn-based diehards can be considered a core chunk of the fandom anymore, I would bet a lot of people never played FF because it had turn-based combat, but for everything else about it. The changes in battle systems are more of a nice little feature than a "I need to go out and buy this now" feature.
From what I've played of FFXV it still feels like modern turn-based combat to me. Kind of hard to explain but holding O and X for attack and dodge isn't that different from scrolling down to defend, selecting it, waiting a turn, and then selecting attack.
