The patch you're talking about fixed the problem where, if you talk to Siegward in the Irithyl kitchen, he moves to the dungeon immediately after killing pontiff, without saving Greirat. You were initially forced to NOT talk to Siegward in the kitchen until Pontif is dead and Greirat back in Firelink. Which was completly counterintuitive because in order to progress quests you ALWAYS have to exhaust dialogue when you meet an npc in souls games.

Apparently there's a "you must be this badass" requirement to linking the flame that Lorian alone didn't fulfill. Else, they'd just sacrifice slaves to the Flame rather than competent people. It'd also explain why they went through the trouble of making Aldrich link it instead of just having somebody else do it: He was there, and strong enough to do it. In a number of instances, DS1 gives you certain tidbits of lore through item descriptions that are either not expanded upon at all, or don't quite fit in to the game. The reason for this is that they originally planned to put in the things that would have it make sense, but they ended up having to leave it out.
