To me, surprises are the very important part. As long as you can keep a sub guessing, they will thoroughly enjoy their experience. It adds to the "lack of control" illusion as well and helps build trust.
Then there's "aftercare", if things get very rowdy and mean I prefer to hang out with the sub when things cool off. Remind them they're not worthless, maybe stroke them cuddle etc. Its just to make sure there's no actual fucked up depression.
