SMD is like on/off in difficulty. If you use items liberally it's a cakewalk and the only reason you should ever die is if you're in one of the longest dungeons and get screwed over by RNG with minimal item spawns. If you try to hoard items and rely on your natural skills good fucking luck, unlike the others where that was a feasible way to play.
Some people like that items are finally important, I do, but some don't like how little your own abilities really matter, which I also do.

SC aren't the biggest publishers or devs, but the PMD games are pretty much their best selling games in recent times. Rescue Team and Explorers sold about as well as a mainline Pokemon game would, and Gates and Super still broke over a million, not to mention Super is still on the market.
The only other really big series they're involved with to my knowledge is the Spike part worked on some big anime games like DBZ in the past, and Chunsoft were the code guys for the first five Dragon Quests.

I remember that right before Hoenn there was a series of linked special episodes featuring a character based off of the Gold/silver male character which was an attempt to see if they could potentially replace ash.
also you know how in the first few episodes in DP they have barely any Ash and were all about Dawn? well that was an attempt to try to replace him as well
