I'm worried that we're reaching a point where being able to live online under an effective pseudonym, or even semi-anonymously like on 4chan, is going the way of the Dodo. Certain countries keep suggesting that registration for social media sites should require some sort of government ID, as ridiculous as that sounds.

That's incorrect. There are 4 tiers of phone number that are registered on the national database, if you want an example go get a free number from Twilio and try to activate a facebook or gmail account from it. It's instantly denied as a tier 3 number cannot be used for identity authentication.
