Well, my favourite thing about Tales combat is finding those stylish combos that chain together. It's been getting easier and easier with things like Xillia letting you chain anything, but also harder because you can do AAANNYYYTHING so you have more to explore to find great chains.
With Zestiria, you have the hold-chains, and I could never get it to chain different artes together that were in different chains. So you were locked into that chain, if that makes sense.
But even that being said, the combos still looked flashy (albeit, done by holding a single button) and the casters felt a lot more fun to play than other games. If we're going by combat alone, I can see why people would dislike it, but I thought it was acceptable, bordering on decent.

With Rose I did (Some A-Arte chain depending on your Exceeds, BG and other things) -> Rising Phoenix -> Whatever was the downward fire arte -> Frozen Shade(?) -> Hold down the button for Dream Slasher -> Burrowing Dragon
They chain without any problems as long as you actually have attacks left in your combo.
