Here's a story that happened many times.
A designer has an idea for a game. He wants to do it right, so he decides to not be lazy. He's gotten an idea for one of his most beloved franchises to expand it for a broader audience and completely change its direction while staying true to its roots. The designer analyzes every piece, rethinking, imagining the game play out.
Finally a team was pieced together and the game starts production. He assembles the game like a jigsaw puzzle, each piece destined for a predetermined place as defined through his idea. Months pass. Progress is slow, but the designer has faith in his idea. Eventually, the game is released and other people in the public play the game for the first time. And that's where it all goes to hell.
Nothing plays out as expected. The hardest enemy falls to a simple, degenerate dodging strategy. The player groans at a tear-jerking story moment because it was forced in so predictably. He hates his companion character when he was supposed to be the most important character in the game.
And good things happen too. He discovers a new way to experience his old, beloved franchise. He falls in love with a secondary character. And now that the game is moving, the designer can (hopefully) see a hundred easy design opportunities. If he tweaked this character, a fascinating new strategy would appear. If he combined those story beats, the scripted story would be purer and more powerful. If he removed that resource cost, the pacing would obviously improve. It all seems so clear now.
The designer's in a bind. On the one hand, he has his idea, into which he poured so much love and time. On the other, he has the reality of the game in front of him- both the unexpected failures and the serendipitous discoveries. There is no good way forward from here. He must either trash his document or ignore his discoveries.
The designer's fundamental mistake is that he overplanned.

The frustrating thing about Other M is that we still have no idea what Nintendo thinks of the backlash it got.
One on hand Sakamoto has vanished from the face of the Earth and it seems like they were forced to re-evaluate the series.
On the other hand you have Other M stuff in Smash, Other M merchandise and they cross promote Other M with other games, Team Ninja got to work on Zelda.
Do they regret making it? Do they think it was fine and that we just didn't understand it?
We'll never know.

Fuck all of you who don't like the Gravity Suit change. Samus's orange Varia Suit is too iconic. I don't want to be purple for the last third of the game.
It's like if Link was forced to wear his Zora or Goron tunic after getting it, and you'll never see him in green again. The suit turning purple when it's power is actually being used is a great idea, regardless of Sakamoto. However, it should turn the actual suit purple, Other M's was too cloud like.

I mean Prime 1 may have slightly generic environments, but the fact that it looks so good with so many effects running at 60fps on the fucking Gamecube in '02 is amazing. Prime 3 has all the colour of 1 with way more creative and interesting environments too, the animations are really superb as well.
DKCR was a little bland looking, but then Tropical Freeze has shitloads of layers to each level with loads of shit in the background and whatnot. Apparently they helped with the Wii U Zelda tech demo as well but idk if that's true.
Having them work on an NX project is probably the only thing that will make me buy that console. They're great artists and techno wizards.

Sakamoto's. He said Metroid Other M was meant to be "a NES game using modern technology". So as an extension of that, he barred the developers from ever using the Nunchuk, even though he admitted it would've been easier to design the game with it. He wanted the player to use the sideways wiimote like a NES controller, and thought it was so clever that you could incorporate the wagglin feature by pointing at the screen to go into 1st person. That was also his way of 'incorporating' Metroid Prime style gameplay.

Sakamoto saw gravity suit samus in a cutscene and was like "who is this purple person? that looks strange".
the devs (who were newer to the company and Metroid mind you) told Sakamoto it was obviously Samus wearing the grav suit, which in their "Metroid rulebook" that Sakamoto himself set in stone back in Super Metroid days, said Grav Samus HAS to be purple.
They were so desperate to adhere to that 'rule' about purple gravity suit, that they went back and forth with sakamoto constantly trying to get his approval on some shade of purple. But he kept saying the purple suit didn't look good in his "serious cutscenes" and that she must be orange. That's what led to the Samus having pink highlights and a purple aura. That was, literally, the only compromise that Sakamoto finally agreed to.
the entire game was full of retarded shit like this. all of it leading back to Sakamoto.
like, the very CONCEPT of the entire game was "exploring samus' emotions as a woman" which according to Sakamoto means crying like a five year old and pissing her pants in fear at a monster she should've killed like 3 times at that point in the story.

Look at the Flaggrah and the Parasite Queen concept, they look amazing and were very well transplanted into the game.
