As far as the genre goes, EO still has the most going for it, with the constant drops in prices, pleasing art style (loli shitposting aside), relatively accessible gameplay, and being on a cheap system everyone has. The battles look boring and the gameplay is pretty tedious. That's enough to keep most people from playing. The portrait art is great and the music is too, but leveling characters and resting them just to level all over again is not fun. That and the games don't give enough information about how much of a difference each point makes when trying to choose skills. Without a guide, you wouldn't know that it's only worth it to, for example, put X points into Fan Dance, but only 2 into Quick Step. The game penalizes you for experimenting because you can't adjust those points without penalty.
Forgive me if I got some information wrong; I only played through EOIV. It was fun and left an impression on me, but the grinding and penalties for experimenting have kept me from playing any of the other games (though I did buy Etrian Mystery Dungeon).

You never really need to grind in EO except for maybe endgame and postgame stuff, the encounters and FOEs in an area are pretty good at keeping you leveled along. Also general rule is to only level a skill halfway to max until later, since afterward there are usually diminishing returns.
Also losing three levels is really lenient, the cost was much steeper in previous games.

Etrain Mystery Dungeon is brutal. You think FOEs are bad? Try the fuckers they throw at you in that game! If they reach the top-most floor, your party whipes, looses all their shit, and the town gets damaged and some facilities are disabled for a set time.

I love the game for the mechanics. It's one of the most solid and satisfying JRPG experiences i've ever had and each new game is just more of what i'd call near-perfection.
I also adore Himukai's artwork. Not for the lolis, but because I think he's a really good character designer and I enjoyed seeing his art evolve from amateurish at best in the EO1 to how genuinely fucking great it is in V.
