Tokusatsu, especially vintage toku, will always be superior to capeshit because actual talent and craftsmanship went into bringing those larger than life concepts to life on a limited budget and resources. I can't speak for showa in general but I think a lot of the oldest series only have partial subs so that might be a barrier to entry.
If you'd prefer showa over heisei but are willing to give heisei a go I'd say the best starting points are probably either kuuga or black.
Either way Kuuga's worth watching for sure, it's probably my favorite series personally speaking.
