The first book is a collection of short stories. A lot of them come into play in the later books. As it goes along it turns from just monster contracts into a more coherent plot.
I thoroughly enjoyed the books, I like seeing someone trying to stay neutral get swept up in the events around him. The monster contracts stayed interesting to me. The politics were interesting. Finally the majority of the characters were interesting.
