It seems to me that the ending implies a return to something like the Age of Ancients, a quiet peaceful time without the conflict of light and dark and all the bad shit that comes with it. And though it may take a while, something entirely new will eventually be born again.
Though it is indeed melancholic in tone, I actually get a sense of hope from from it that all of the other endings lack, particularly in being able to still hear the Fire Keeper's voice in the darkness, making me consider it as the only ending that can be considered "good".

The Dragonslayer Shield and Great Axe are both said to be smelted from parts of the Dragonslayer Armor. Part of a cross spear can also be seen in the Greataxe although it's unlikely to be Ornstein's golden armor and spear. Probably something similar before being frankensteined into that thing.
