And? Merchant life in the good old days was pretty much like living the nomad life, wandering from place to place looking for shekels. The only reason it was associated with Jews more was because Christian Europeans generally had an aversion to the merchant occupation in general, which wasn't the case among say the Arabs or Jews, whose religion had no scruples with making money through trade.
