Depends on how long it takes to make a game for it.
Consoles need a few full dev cycles and these days it seems like the cycles are getting too long.
But then the consoles can't be out for 10 years anymore because the HW can't keep up.
Which is probably why you've got them toying with phone upgrade models now.
Current state of console developing, probably 8-9 years with a hardware upgrade inbetween - which seems like what's happening.

Depends really. My Super Nintendo has been chugging along since my Dad bought it for me back in the early 90s and have had zero issues with any of the controllers, cartridges, etc.
My fat 60gb Playstation 3, in contrast, that I bought Christmas 2006 kicked the bucket a year ago, giving me a little less than 10 years on its lifespan before it needed repairs.
On top of that, the PS3 controllers are fragile, especially the ones before the Dualshock 3. If it isn't the battery not taking a charge anymore, it is the Six-Axis sensor malfunctioning.
Granted, Dualshock 4 certainly feels sturdier, and I haven't had to replace any of them yet with my PS4, but I have a few years before we will see if the PS4 outlives the PS3.
On the other hand, if you're talking how long a console generation should last, you should get ten years out of it. Otherwise, you might as well just maintain a gaming PC.
