Same as every city builder/tycoon.
You get to build working infrastructure from scratch, and watch it grow until you get bored and start again. Its a very dumb experience

Or to sum it up in a single word: gameplay.
>>
>>336332659
> deep mechanics
DF is very shallow as far as actual depth of gameplay goes. Contrived == complex. As a player, you are restricted to assigning jobs and filling up the building queue. As far as economy, religion, diplomacy go, its babby tier compared to any Paradox game
> loads of content
Wow, you can build 20000000000000 different workshops and spend next 5 hours assigning bedrooms. Loads of really bad, repetitive content
> challenging learning curve
Is 'DF is hardcore' still a meme? A simple hall filled with box traps stops literally anything, because designing AI is hard

New update hype?
>>
>>336333039
Do you know what the words mechanics, content, and learning are?
Mechanics are the things you don't usually see.
Content is the stuff you're able to do, Hint: in DF it's god damned near anything
Learning: Hey, I just picked up this game at random from some faggots on /tg/! I'm going to try my hand. Oh what the fuck
And that continues on for at least 40 more fortresses.
Be a faggot elsewhere, retard.
>>
>>336333189
>And that continues on for at least 40 more fortresses.
You were not the brightest kid, right? Most people explore all game mechanics within their first 5 forts

>>336332552
Now I don't really remember Dwarf fortress too well, but what was the point of even bothering with the demands of things like the Mayor or allowing things like laws? It seemed to do nothing helpful and was just annoying and potentially harmful to your fortress.

Pic related does a good job explaining.

I also thoroughly enjoy becoming a necromancer and cutting off children's heads, keeping them in a sack, then tossing the heads at people and reanimating the heads after they hit them. They then come to life and do their best to bite people to death.

It's an extra little challenge, and sometimes it'll cause the death of your fortress, like a great many DF features it's something that's pretty trivial to work around but adds a little flavour.

It'll almost certainly be getting overhauled at some point anyway, so it's a mechanic you can involve yourself with as much or as little as you like, if you keep your mayor happy and don't produce any goods for trade that are forbidden.

Management. Building cool fortresses. But right now its appeal is autistic, I can't wait for large-scale economy and army expeditions in fortress mode to be implemented.

Decorative, unless he's made the chimneys in order to provide light to refuse pits so that they don't produce miasma, which seems unlikely.

making people with a better imagination and art than you make shit like >>336332330
to bait people into thinking df is anything more than an extremely barebone the sims/dungeon keeper hybrid
>>
The reason why many people complain about DF learning curve is actually because of the inconsistent game logic. Games that try to be accessable try to keep some sort of logic behind their systems, for instance in WoW leatherworking is mechanically identical to smithing. In dwarf fort, every system is build like a game of its own.

The result is that folks like me end up confused when the game detects that a dwarf injured his right ear, but the bookkeeper magically spawns papers to write on. Or that you can customize your militia so deeply, but working parts on anything engineering related "just work".

Bookkeepers don't write anything, or do anything with books, they just keep stock.

I agree with your point though, it's an inevitable consequence of the game taking so long to develop sadly.

It's not as difficult to grasp as people make it out to be, just download the lazy newb pack (which includes some graphical tilesets and utilities), open up some tutorial (such as http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Quickstart_guide) and start playing.
>>
>>336340150
It's not hard anon. There is a lot of shit to take in initially but none of it is really that complicated.

it offers depth that modern titles can olny dream of.

also if you like realism it's a game you.

I also like the combat system a lot. Creatures don't have health pools and die when those are empty. Puncturing a lung makes them wind and get slower until they faint with suffocate. A kick in the guts makes them retch and vomit. breaking their right hand makes them drop whatever they hold in their right hand. A vampire doesn't need air so you can't choke him to death etc.

To put it in modern terms for those who aren't familiar with the game; think Minecraft mixed with RTS base management like Dungeon Keeper or Evil Genius with much deeper gameplay mechanics and a lot of TECHNOLOGY moments.

If there's one game that embodies this faggot's "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING" line it's Dwarf Fortress.

Deciding which area to use the fill tool on next can be tricky. Pick the wrong one and the AI might use the bucket on one of your areas instead, woah!

I'd play it more often if it didn't look and play like shit.
I'll stick to Dungeon Keeper.
>>
>>336332012
It has real gameplay and a complex system to explore. Current generation of gamers wouldn't understand.
>>
If DF had a really good tutorial for beginners i think it would have Minecraft tier amount of players

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying "WAAH I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW TO PLAY THIS", i'm just saying it could use a real good tutorial for newcomers.

This is coming from a dude whos been playin on and off for 2 years.
>>
>>336348669
So you're not one of the current generation of gamers then?
