First one was novel and a breath of fresh air even though the modern setting isn't really my thing. Second one was decent sequel but still kinda "eh".
They were both great and provided hundreds of hours of fun multiplayer.
I personally enjoyed 3 the most
Biggest weapon selection (all pretty satisfying to use) and really enjoyed helping the team with support streaks

They were both shit and defined by their setpieces. MW's was better done, MW2's was 2edgy4u bullshit. MW2 dick riders praise the shit MP and the shit SP but never praise the one thing that MW2 was good at, which was Special Ops.

BO2 got the streaks closest to perfect by rewarding objective play above all else and making the heavy streaks feel really powerful.
AW had great ideas, but in execution, the streaks were rarely worth the points. BOIII streaks are on the underpowered side (though I do love blowing some guy's HATR or RAPS outta the sky ten seconds after they spawn).

Also the Sat Com was balanced as fuck. They're on the ground so they aren't instantly blown out of the sky like UAVs were in BOII and it rewards coordination if you drop multiple ones at the same time.

I played MW2 vastly more. But it was so unbelievably broken that I ended up hating it and not buying another CoD since.
Regardless, the maps and weapons felt very right and there was shit loads of content as I also played through single player over and over again.
CoD4 is absolutely the more balanced and "pristine" experience of the two but also not quite as fresh or fun. I also like the idea of promod that removed the bullshit.
I probably wouldn't go back to either game anymore.
