>Miyazaki describes himself as a difficult child. “Unlike most kids in Japan, I didn’t have a dream,” he says. “I wasn’t ambitious.” He eventually found himself aimlessly pursuing a degree in social science at the well-respected Keio University. As he approached graduation, he considered applying to a game development studio, but drifted into a job at the US IT company Oracle Corporation.

>Several years later, he started thinking about video games again. He met up with some former college friends who suggested new titles to play. One was Ico, a mystical fairytale in which players assume the role of a boy who must lead a waif-like girl by the hand along a castle’s craggy ramparts, pursued by their ghoulish captors. “That game awoke me to the possibilities of the medium,” says Miyazaki. “I wanted to make one myself.”

>But Miyazaki had a problem: at 29, he was too old to apply for graduate positions and too inexperienced for anything else. “Not a lot of places would take me,” he says. “From Software was one of the few.” Ema Kodaka, who edits Miyazaki’s scripts, believes this career change, which resulted in a considerable drop in pay, might be why he is held in such regard by his staff. “He is a unique talent,” she says. “In Japan, even today, people usually join a company as a graduate and stay for life. For Miyazaki to change career and, within 10 years, become company president – that’s unprecedented in Japan. It’s inspiring.”

Why haven't you mad that video game yet, anon?

Besides, no western company is going to go out of their way to hire a writer unless its some big vanity project - the average writer for games are already friends with management and whoever else is onbaord.

>>336321443
Writing is a shitshow in almost any industry. The real opportunities are in "design". You can get a degree in two years at a community college and basically just use common-sense for everything else. You don't need to be a good artist, or programmer, or whatever, you just need to know what good work looks like and how it's put together. Practically all of my friends are designers and I'm kicking myself for getting a four-year university degree when I could have just been majoring in design.
>>
>>336322494
Exactly. Success stories are misleading as fuck. 4chan in itself is proof that the childhood stories of success and happiness are false. Most of us are average. We're not geniuses or talented. We are the majority that is never talked about.
>>
>>336321271
>Made levels in Super Mario Maker

I wonder if someone will land a job at Nintendo for making good Mario Maker levels. I mean, it's a great way to apply for a level design position there isn't it?
>>
My only ambition is to die and I can't even do that right.
>>
>>336321796
You can still get graduate positions.
It's just retarded Japanese bullshit that prevented him from doing so.
I've had 40 year olds in graduate positions at work. They are more focused than the 23 year olds we usually get, and spend most of the time actually working instead of fucking around on Facebook.
It's never too late, anon.
>>
>>336322972
But that's because people are contented with where they are at some point. They "settle." The time you're spending on here could be spent furthering your goals of creativity.
>>
it's one thing to not have a plan while a student but what about approaching 30 and having less of an idea of what you want to do than in high school?

>>
>>336322972
The fact still remains that Miyazaki could have thought the exact same thing and given up.
>>
>>336323065

Isn't it kind of necessary for some people to settle though? Like what if every single man on earth set out to pursue their dream job settling for absolutely nothing less would all the shitty necessary jobs cease needing Someone to do them?

I disagree. I think anyone can make a decent level if the tools are already given to them, but it takes a lot of work to teach the player without making them feel like they're being lectured, and forcing the player to master a skill. Look up 3D World/Galaxy level design videos if you ever get the chance. I think the real test of skill is to hand someone an unprecedented game feature and tell them "make this fun, and give the player a sense of progression."

>>336324009
You basically have to keep throwing yourselves to the wolves until one decides to take a bite and then once they've bit you bite back. You bite hard and you take everything you can and you incorporate it with what you know until you can fake it well enough that they think you're a wolf as well and then you keep living like a wolf, breathing like a wolf, thinking like a wolf until you're a fake that's realer than the real thing.

The real thing does not have to try to be real because at it's core it knows that it is real.

The fake tries the hardest to be real because it knows it's fake, and will keep trying and trying and trying to be the real thing until it starts becoming not what the real thing actually is, but what everyone believes the real thing should be.

Miyazaki's best games are always the ones that introduces a world/a new setting; Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne.
If it gets a sequel it just kinda ruins the feel to the world.

Being able to enter another person's game whether or not they wanted you to join and being able to either help or hinder them is unique to the games he's made. Especially when you think about the covenants and how they factor into it. Some are strictly for being a dick, others are for co-op, and now in DS3 you have the grapebros that lean both ways.

Why life is so hard? Why is this world obsessed with money? Why everything works on money? Video games are made because of money, you went to school/college because of money, internet exists because of money, you feel sad and depressed because of money, everything exists because of money. Money. Money. MONEY.

There's people that live out in the wilderness and are extremely happy with their lives, but that's not for everyone though. You honestly have to ask yourself what it is you want out of life, and go for it. Sometimes life isn't worth all the bullshit, and it doesn't hurt to cut out certain things to make it better for yourself if you feel it's slowing you down. Also, don't ever have kids. That's the worst mistake you can ever make in your life if you aren't 100% dead set on having one.

I fucking love this man. If I make a game though, it'd be TOO dark souls inspired and I'm not sure I'd want that. I didn't get far in the first game, but I latched onto it's art, and the atmosphere and what he was trying to do. It's inspiring a comic I'm working on, and it pushes me to get farther just to experience more. But..I don't know what I want to do. I'm not great at vidya coding, or have the patience. I want to make vidya, yet...I don't...I guess I like the idea for it, and it wouldn't make sense for someone to have a brain child for a game idea and not know what the hell to do with it in terms of coding. I'm hoping I can meet some bros or work with some current bros and maybe...make something. I'm trying to learn guitar, I'm trying to improve my drawing and doing well, so why not vidya coding? Anyone else know this feel? It might be too specific, but would you work with similar minded people and try to make a good game?

What game would that be?

I've always thought about going back to college to get a graduate degree. Problem is though my bachelors degree is in art but I've been working as a programmer for 4 years so if I go back they'll probably only let me get a masters in art, but I'd be completely out of my league. If I try to go for a computer science or engineering degree I'd probably have to get an undergraduate which means I'd be swamped with painfully trivial courses and I'd just be wasting my time.

When i first got out of Highschool, i went to college trying to get into the medical field because my entire family told me it was a good paying career. I honestly didn't give a fuck about pursuing a career in the medical field. Hell i didn't really know what i wanted to do with my life at that age. In the end, i wound up dropping out of college and became a neet. I'm now starting to put the piece of my life back together.
