Last night /v/ had one of the best Silent Hill threads in recent memory. It got so many posts that it nearly hit the bump limit, and I'd love to get another discussion going. Popular topics last night included:

>Favorite game
>Favorite character
>Favorite monster
>Favorite boss
>Favorite song
>Favorite weapon
>Favorite outfit
>Favorite ending

I'm just going to dump a bunch of Silent Hill stuff to get the thread going. All are welcome.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

yup. Was playing SH1 on emulator, for who-knows how many'th time, and I just got the crazy idea to go check out the Old SH places when the darkness fell. Took dozens of shots, and decided to put 'em all into one big collage. I think it works pretty well as a demonstration of SH1's atmosphere and style, no?

I soon after did a much more humble "less dark" collage in same vein (pic related), thinking I'd go around the whole game doing these. I never got around finishing that task tho'.

I have the PSN Store versions of both PAL and NTSC variants of SH1, but on PS3, and they work just fine. Don't own Vita, unfortunately, but I'd assume it can do native PS1 emulation just fine? My PSP at least had no issues playing it and MGS1.

Alternatively, you could just grab the ISO from the links above, and emulate it on PC.here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.

The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)
-Eternal's SPU Engine.

alternatively just use a software renderer for very 1:1 PS1-like graphics, including 240p only.

actually, the first couple years of any decade tend to still be like epilogue to the previous decade.

>>336297965
Depends what you are looking for.
For starters, the widescreen hack BREAKS lots of games / their visuals. In SH1's case, Harry's flashlight's light-beams start floating off his chest when you move around, as its position is defined by the resolution itself. Similar issues tend to happen in many old games, and not only on PS1 emulation, which is why I personally prefer 4:3 resolutions when emulating.

Also, with the latest version, ePSXe can do all the tricks PCSX-R got popular for. And at least in my use, ePSXe has always been faster and more stable too.

You would probably have to find each team members name individually and search up if they're even still developing.

One things for sure, they most definitely aren't making horror games right now.

Yes, you are.

SH managed to do something that seemed impossible at the time: snatch the crown of the king of survival horror genre from Resident Evil.

There'd been plenty of clones already at the time, but SH played its own game. While the gameplay is very RESI-like, down to controls and playing-style, the plot and atmosphere are from totally different world. Where as RE focused on B-movie (splatter) horror with guns and grunts, SH went with more psychological, eerie horror, with these "every day fellows" as the main characters.

Many games are sarcastically called "deep" when it comes to the story, but Silent Hill saga (= the original games by Team Silent, 1-4) really have earned that title as well. There's enough backstory and symbolism to write a thick book, and it's pretty amazing that after a good 16 years, an old fan like me can STILL learn and find something brand new from the games.

On top of that, the games have gorgeous visuals (yes, even the PS1 original), and just superb soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka really was a genius when it came to this series' audio.

I'd seriously recommend giving them a shot if you're interested in horror games, or just a bit more mature themes in general. You can grab them all for PC from >>336296167. Play in release order, always at least on "Normal" difficulty, crank up the volume, lower brightness, and play alone in the dark! And avoid spoilers as long as you can.
Consider replaying the games a few times too, as there's many endings and unlockables.
>>
>>336304469
>snatch the crown of the king of survival horror genre from Resident Evil

I don't really consider the Silent Hill games survival horror. There's not much "surviving" when you play them. RE at least has some survival elements.
>>
>>336304469

Fair enough, guess I'll give them a shot. I have a piece of shit computer and don't know how to emulate games on PC, so I guess I may have to grab them on a PSN sale or something.
>>
>>336304951
I have seen this argument come up more often in recent days, but to be honest I don't quite understand it. Especially from RE2 forward, it was almost recommended to off all the enemies you came across, as there was no shortage of supplies in most cases.

While a above average player probably won't have ammo shortage in Silent Hill either, especially in the first game the enemies tend to be fast and agile enough to give you hard time if you try to kill everything. It's much better to just run OR turn off the lamp and sneak past most foes.

>>336305218
>I have a piece of shit computer and don't know how to emulate games on PC
PS1 emulation is literally child's play for any computer made in the past 10 years. I literally started emulating PS1 and N64 games a good decade ago, on an ancient single-core Windows XP machine. There's good emulator plugin settings told at >>336297308

Similarly, the PC ports of SH2-4 are already 15 years old DX8 titles. ANY PC-like machine made in the past decade will once again run them, no problems.
The SH PC Guide and links posted earlier explain all the basics and make the games run smooth on modern PCs.

>PSN sale
you can ONLY get the SH1 from PSN Store.
There's been NO re-release of SH2-4.
If you see anyone even joke about getting the GOD FUCKING AWFUL "SH HD Collection", slap him to the face; that shit is just terrible in every possible way. Not worth it even if you'd get it for free.
>>
>>336305768

Thanks. I'll save that info for later use in case I lose track of this thread.

I'll see about SH1 on PSN, and I still have my PS2 so maybe I can find a used copy of SH2. I decided to check out Amazon for copies of SH2 and it's over $80 USD... what in the fuck? Is it because the game was that good that a new copy costs so much?
>>
>>336305768

When I play RE, I always keep a couple things in my mind. Herb count. Storage count. Weapon holstered. Enemy placements. These are all things that impact how I play. When I'm playing SH, I don't think about any of those things. I just immerse myself in the atmosphere. Both the games can be made trivial, but at first, you definitely feel survival elements in RE moreso than in SH.
>>
>>336306217

samefag here. SH1 is $5.99 on PSN for PS3. Not too bad.

Yeah, SH1 is just few bucks, and totally worth it even without sales.

The PS2 versions of the rest are kinda "definitive" versions, being originals, so if you can grab used copies for decent price, go for it!

>SH2 and it's over $80 USD... what in the fuck?
It's both very good game, and thanks to Konami's totally neglecting the entire IP since 2004, when they kicked Team Silent out, there's not been a valid re-release of any sort. Especially the PC port's physical copies are starting to be these Chrono Trigger -tier collectibles amongst the fans. I'm just glad I picked up the SH3's PC copy when it was still new.

If you got a PAL PS2, you got the option of trying to look up the PS2 Silent Hill Collection. It's literally just the original discs of SH2, 3 and 4 put into one big package, but it is quite sought after item these days too.

As a sort of an pro-tip, you can totally forget about the series after you've finished SH1-4. The series took a deep nose-dive to diarrhea when the original devs were gone, as the many random western teams tried their luck with the IP afterwards, totally disregarding the series' lore and even play-testing at worst.

dude, my craptop from 2011 without dedicated videocard can run both PS1 emus and the PC versions of the sequels perfectly fine at 720p! There's bound to be dozens of setting up instructions online, prolly even videos on Youtube showing how things done.
Anyway, if you want to play actually scary survival horror games, some damn influential ones at that, you gotta play Silent Hill! And don't be upset if many things seem to go over your head at first, it's perfectly normal.
