Pretty okay. The new consoles launched with junk, but the PS2 had a great library.

Don't you remember it yourself?

same but without microtransactions

The custom maps were endless and dota had yet to take over.

it was the blissful culmination of the industry's 20+ years of experience with pseudo- and full-3D games

then the diminishing returns started to kick in as originality all but dried up

My word, you're right. So much shite... I certainly don't miss that aspect
>>
Not that you would know OP, considering you probably weren't born yet.
>>
It was pretty normal in a good way. The 360 had been out for a year and the hype was building up for the PS3. The last gen was also still being supported heavily by a shit ton of games. Also a lot of movie games for whatever reason. Playing Oblivion for the first time is still a good memory.
>>
>>336293812
>>336293426
it was... weird. Especially in a hindsight.

7th console gen was brand new, and launched with pretty shit games. HD TVs weren't quite as common just yet, which resulted problems with some games, like the Dead Rising.

It was sort of a calm-before-storm sort of year; Nothing too major happened, and for a while things still worked like in the past. Previous year we got FEAR, BF2, GTA:SA, Fable, Psychonauts, SW: KOTOR 2, SC:Chaos Theory, etc. In the 2006 itself, we did get BF 2142, TES:Oblivion, Zelda:TP and NWN2 though, and some sleeper hits like Prey and Red Orchestra, but that's about it. Next year dropped the bomb with motherfucking Crysis, STALKER, TF2 / whole Orange Box, Bioshock, CoD4, ... etc

All in all, it wasn't really THAT different at that point anymore, but not all the blocks of the modern (shitty) trends were quite in place yet. Meanwhile, I recently got to read this 2009's gaming magazine in a library, and it felt like it could've been printed last month: the main articles were (already) all about AssCreed, GTA(4), Far Cry (2), Cowadooteh, Uncharted, etc.

It's very sad how it feels like the entire industry hasn't moved a fucking inch in over half a decade.
It's absolutely mindbogging that the old jokes about "Call of Duty 12" or "Halo 7" are close to coming true.

my thoughts exactly, though it's starting to be almost a decade in my books.

It's just mind boggling how /v/ already made THIS kind of images back in 2009, and nothing's really changed. Is it any wonder then, that teens these days don't even know WTF "Doom" is?

played all my games at my friends houses
on pc it was heroes 3 and on ps1 it was quake 2 with a multitap shit was more than cash

best gaming experience of my fucking life

we also played pokemon card and yu gi oh games and went to the local "tournaments"

i was fucking poor as shit but we had more fun than when i got some money turned chad or got a job

feels terrible, nowdays i play only fucking dota2 and emulate ps1 games

I was more into those multi-system magazines myself (Gamemaster, Super Power...etc), so I got pretty wide info package each month. I used to stare those multi-page reviews in awe, read through those full walkthroughs of games like Resident Evil 2 and imagine going through the events in my head long before actually playing it myself, and just being mindblown with each E3 special article during late 90s-mid 00s.

Those days are now long gone. 2005 was the last great year in gayming, with 2007 being a nasty tease of good things that never became a norm.

I was a lot less jaded back then, and I think I had a lot less reason to be.

Sure, there's still plenty of good devs and promising titles out there today, but back then the basic videogame framework was more recognizable without all the cinematic fluff of what we have now.

There seems to have been a shift from "look how fucking bombastically awesome this is" to "look how cool and mature this is."
And anything that markets itself in the way of the former is riding on the population's pining for that.

I'm mostly talking about of my ass, but I think it's most easily summed up as: video games were more clearly "games" back then, but they've moved closer to "interactive experiences."

That doesn't mean such experiences can't be great games, but it was easier back then to just see something out of a magazine and think "damn that looks fun. I want to play it."
>>
>>336293426
For me,the future of videogames never seemed brighter than in 2006.I remember reading about BiA 3 right after e3 that year and being absolutely amazed by the massive graphical improvment over previous games.

>I'm mostly talking about of my ass, but I think it's most easily summed up as: video games were more clearly "games" back then, but they've moved closer to "interactive experiences."

Not only that, but the consoles themselves were just gaming machines, and weren't trying to be all-in-one multimedia centers. Basically, the game industry was still content to exist in its own niche.

Bullshit it should have been a direct sequel to the first. The first game was fucking epic.

>The story of Prey 2 was to focus on U.S. Marshal Killian Samuels, who starts the game on a passenger flight which suddenly crashes onto the Sphere (the crash is shown in the original Prey). At the end of a short battle with some aliens he is knocked unconscious, after which the plot jumps forward several years. Samuels is now a bounty hunter on the alien world Exodus.

Games released now by far lack originality, creativity, constantly hold your hands and assume you have he IQ of a potato, require next to no thinking or coordination, and are the equivalent of interactive movies with their >muh 2048p 256 fps Cinematic Experienceâ„¢.

Hmm let's see. MMORPGs were rampant to the point that there were new one every month; hardly anyone ran Crysis properly to the point that 'I can run Crysis in max options' was something of brag; starcraft 1 matches were taken seriously as were counterstrike; 6th gen consoles were on its way out and a lot of games were priced to be dumped; GPX2 and GP32 were relevant; people just started to crack emulations on PSP and homebrews on DS; PS3 'had no games' at least not yet; XBox360 was doing pretty good despite not really having any real game either; massive LAN parties were on its way out and being replaced with just online matches.

So, a little of good and a little of bad.

It was begging of the end.
Just look at the games that came out.
Oblivion brought us DLC and consolefication. Everyone laughed at horse armor, but look where are we now.
Rainbow Six Vegas showed us the change in shooters. From hardcore tactical game to arcade tacticool.
Splinter Cell expanded on multiplayer ideas, but the game itself wasn't half as good as Chaos Theory was.
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey was great, but a consolefied casual version of the classic adventure games.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter shared the same fate as rainbow six. Now it was all tacticool.
Gothic 3? What a trainwreck of a game.

We still thought everything is going to be fine, that no one will buy silly overpriced DLC, and stupid tacticool FPS. How wrong we were...

Vice City, Okami, FF 12, Twilight Princess, i think katamari had been out a while, shadow of the colossus.

Man... I could tear up thinking about it. Didn't buy a ps3 until 2009 because nothing seemed like a real "game" until i picked up bayonetta.
>>
>>336315245
ehhh nevermind. i was off on my times.

I think games were the best in the 90's, but that's when I was a kid/early teen so I think that's the main thing.
It's cliche to say it, I know, but that doesn't mean it rings any less true today.
if I was a kid today I imagine I'd be all over Minecraft and possibly LoL and I'd reminisce about it in 15 years.
>>
Pretty cool familia. I remember playing the ever loving fuck out of some Dead Rising 1 and Halo 2 multiplayer every day, with some cool PS2 games mixed in, like Rogue Galaxy.
>>
>tfw only started gaming recently

I can't imagine what it was like to actively game in the early-mid 2000's, thinking that games like Deus Ex and Half Life were the foundations future games would build and improve upon... only to get what we have now instead

I've been here too long

2007-2008 is literally when EVERYTHING went downhill. Vidyas, society, comic books, movies, TV, politics, the world in general.

It was such a bad time.
>>
>>336316946
but muh iphone and muh social media
>>
>>336317039
It's probably because of the iphone, it allowed normies to infect everything.
>>

>What was gaming like in 2006 (10 years ago)?
Everyone was laughing at Sony's E3 and talking about how it was dead on arrival and Sony was doomed.
>>
Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable
>>
>>336316946
No, it went downhill around 2000. You'd know that if you were born in the 90's.
>>336314179
Ghost Recon Online was fun as fuck to play, until cheaters took it over and Ubi introduced p2w system that shat all over anyone not willing to spend at least 20 bucks on the game for base weapons and armor that would become completely obsolete later.
>>
>>336297489
>There seems to have been a shift from "look how fucking bombastically awesome this is" to "look how cool and mature this is."

This is due to two synergistic factors:

1. Publisher's desire for vidya to be accepted as a legitimate pastime like movies and books so as to increase their mass appeal due to less social stigma
2. Developers' and reviewers' desire for vidya to be recognized as "art" (they always have been) or rather that they be "artsy". This is to boost the egos of said developers and reviewers to make them convince themselves that they made the right life choices and aren't just working in a kid's hobby.
>>
>>336313802
I havent played any of these only mario.
>>
>>336317812
Then go and play them. Those games are incredible and most of them have aged very well.
>>
>>336317436
I've literally never heard anyone ever claim that game development is a kid's hobby.
>>
>>336317259
GRO was p2w from the day 1. You had to buy fucking grenades before every game. Also it had nothing to do with old GR games.

>it went downhill around 2000.
If you go full fucking elitist you can say that things went to shit around 2003, but 2000? Most of today's classics came out between 99 and 02.
>>
>>336317259

Shit went downhill when AOL, Juno, and Prodigy internet services got big

The internet being readily available to everyone fucked up everything
>>
>>336318212
>>GRO was p2w from the day 1. You had to buy fucking grenades before every game
Grenades weren't necessary when I was playing in the beta, skill and team work was enough to counter nade fags.
>>Most of today's classics came out between 99 and 02

Valkyrie profile 2 was released. It was tri-ace ' s last decent game.
>>
2007 was literally the last year PC got something interesting I wanted to play.
>>
>>336296723
Fucking underage b&. Games are meant to be in trilogies at MAXIMUM. Fucking cod shouldn't have 12+ entries, they're just milking a stale formula.

You are the cancer killing video games.
>>
>>336318694
>Grenades weren't necessary
Doesn't change the fact that you had to buy them with in game currency or real money.

> skill and team work was enough
Until you were against guy who bought top tier weapon.

>Being this young
>27 is young
kk gramps.
Jerking yourself off about early 90s games is fun and all, until you try to actually play them today. Anything more complex than a fucking mario is a mess.
>>
I was pretty much only playing Guild Wars and CS:S
>>
>>336319501
>Doesn't change the fact that you had to buy them with in game currency or real money
They never were a necessity until very recently. I was playing in the beta before it was released up until a few years ago, and not once did I ever buy any of them.
>Until you were against guy who bought top tier weapon
Kek yeah funny thing about that, I had and kept onto a beta weapon that was actually almost as good as the "best" weapon that were released when the game went live. Thing was sexy as fuck. It was a Soviet sub machine gun with wooden stock, and sniping scope with mad range on top. Fucker fired like crazy and had deadly accuracy. To be honest I never understood why Ubi didn't remove the gun from my inventory when the game went live.
>until you try to actually play them today
Hmm yes funny thing about that too. I still play them today and they're neither a mess and offer far more enjoyment and gameplay then modern AAA shitfests for the most part.
>>
>>336319897
> until very recently
I wouldn't know, since I stopped playing around 2013

> I had and kept onto a beta weapon
Cool story. How long you had to grind to get it?

> I still play them today
Sure nice to be stuck in a past, gramps.

Were there still whiny fags trying to force their loneliness into every conversation back in 2006?
>>
What is this meme nowadays where everyone over 26 is considered "old"? People are living to like, 110+ nowadays. 27 doesn't seem that old to me.
>>
The industry peaked in 2001 and then committed suicide around 2010.
>>
>>336320884
When I mean "recently" I mean like a few years anyway.
>Cool story. How long you had to grind to get it?
Hardly any grinding. The beta was actually fun to play and didn't require immense grinding.
>Sure nice to be stuck in a past, gramps
Whatever, I'm not spoiled by shiny modern graphics.
>>
>>336321239
why are people in their 20s considered children?

in the past you'd be 12 and become a man.

in the past your parents were dead by the age of 30.

so there's that.

>>336321414
Because in the past those 12 year olds acted a lot smarter and mature.
