I just want to thank the anons on here so suggested getting FFIV DS. Best version of the game ever made and tough as hell. I never actually made it past Edge as a kid and was surprised Fusoya even existed as a fighter. It had a good ending and I'm somewhat contemplating getting After Years on Steam despite hearing it is nonstop fan service.
I think IV is god tier. I love how characters come and go with abilities. Still remember Rydia's return as an adult when I was a kid to this day. What a badass game.

FFIV is the best Fantasy focused Final Fantasy (Very little in terms of magitek/tech, barring the Moon Men)
FFXIII isn't a very good Final Fantasy, but as a game, it's meh. Not terrible, but not memorable if it didn't have Final Fantasy in it's name.
Hopefully XV gets in Great to God tier, but it's too soon to call anything on the game.

No they don't. In X is traditional turn base like in Persona and its very fun, addicting and requires strategy. XIII is ATB but it the game plays itself.
And the Sphere Grid is way more fun and interesting than that god awful level up system XIII had.

That's combat, not gameplay. FF13 used action oriented turn based combat. It still is turn based combat.

Really? The Sphere Grid was totally tacked on while the crystalithium was integral. That automatically makes FF13's leveling up system better.

But in no way is it good or even decent. Its too easy in a series that is already known for being too easy. It makes the other games look balanced which is ridiculous.
The card game and the relatively early option to turn off random encounters are the only good gameplay things that VIII does.

Gameplay is what in the game you do like in side quests, game level design, puzzles, minigames, etc.

Just guard and just attack are a cheat code to my heart. It's an exciting game to play. I love the freedom to go wherever I wish and the customization too. I like the Esper+Relic/Materia system even if they called it Schemata in this one. The atmosphere is great (tension/adventurous). Overall it was an idea they thought would be fun (and they were right), which they didn't have time to polish, but that had its upsides since they didn't have time to big time Square-Enixify it either, like, let's say, the Sphere Grid or SquallxRinoa romance. As a result it becomes fun as a game. By proxy since I have the time of my life in battles, I can easily just laugh when trains run on invisible rails, Navi speaks up again, I'm sent to check clocks or any inane bullshit such as retreaded main character stories. It's all really easily disregarded, because the game isn't too serious about itself either, which I greatly appreciate. For a bonus since it's short, it's really replayable too. Lightning is also tolerable for the first time for me here.

Wow, remembering that I need to attack flying enemies with Wakka sure is hard. It's almost as hard as matching up the colors on the enemy info screen when I'm ordering Lulu to cast a spell. Good thing the characters in the game will tell me whenever I do it wrong. I don't know how I'd ever get through it otherwise.

Objectively, I found it mediocre. Gameplay is braindead and a few materia can easily carry you through the entire game, so there's not much incentive to mix things up. Hell, even just attacking normally can serve you well outside of a few instances. The slot reel, by its nature, often activates when you don't need it.
As for the story, it was okayish. Genesis was shit, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, but I don't really understand the hate for Angeal. I don't think he was great or anything, but I wasn't offended by his presence, and he was an alright mentor figure for Zack. I like how the game showed more of Sephiroth being a pretty cool guy before he went nuts.I liked the ending more than the original version of Zack's death.
