If you press start when selecting your team order it will have either a happy, sad or neutral face next to them. This is meant to represent how much they like their teammates. When a happy teammate dies you gain 1 bar. When an unhappy teammate dies you lose 1 bar.

Yeah. Mechanics were weird. It had Crush- I mean Critical Counter (aka land a big counter hit close C and start going ham with combos for around 5 seconds), the clash system which for instance, allowed you to negate fireballs with Terry's Burn Knuckle, and a whole lot of other stuff. Also only one bar too for supers and shit.
It was very jank and I don't think you should play it.
The match hud I kinda liked just a bit more than XIII's, I find. That and the lady announcer was neat.

SNK netcoding has always been bad, but XII still has the worst netcoding I have ever experienced in a fighting game. It was truly unplayable. Like a match taking one hour unplayable.
But as far as actual interface goes it was fucking legendary. It has been years since I played it so I may be exaggerating it due to faulty memory, but it had a shit ton of features.
You could make a clan. You could invite people to said clan. You had a clan page in game where you could update news on your clan and talk about clan challenges. You could challenge other clans to battles.
It was really neat and I was really disappointed that other fighting games never tried to take some of those features. The clan system seems like a really natural thing to include in fighting games.
