Any game with prerendered backgrounds tended to look pretty nice
Anything without them looked like garbage compared to your average N64 game though

Games that aren't Crash Bandicoot or Spyro looked like trash. Probably because Nintendo usually went with the safe kiddy cartoony look for their games, while most PS games were trying too hard to be realistic when it was still too early.

N64 games look better, with or without the anti-aliasing.

Reminder that the N64 could do pre rendered backgrounds but didn't usually because they are shit.
>>
>>336281228

Because the ps1 skipped out on basic proper texture rendering in favor of other shit.

>sonyfags will defend all their textures going apeshit based on the angle you look at it
>>
why do ps1 games look like they take place during an earthquake
>>
ps1 sprite games still look godlike, xenogears is purdy. Vagrant story looks pretty solid for what it was. Zelda games looked pretty good.

For the most part anything 3d from that era looks like shiet though.
>>
>>336284738
It was made by Rare at the end of the N64's lifecycle. Of course they could pull that shit off.

what
>>
>>336284772
That's because they're 32-bit graphics while n64 were 64 bit friendo :^)

Realistic for the time, you tard. Not Crysis-tier realistic.
Check Medal of Honor for example. They were trying to make humans look "human" but shit was deep in the uncanny valley. Or FF8 even. Pretty much any game where they try too hard to step out of the cartoony style.
>>
>>336284585
Or MGS, Vagrant Story, Ape Escape, Gran Turismo, etc.

It still puzzles me why the N64 version of Quake 2 had those choppy as fuck animations while the PS1's were completely smooth.

Remember back when Nintendo had some of the best 3D modelers around?
>>
>>336284746
It didn't because they took a lot of space. The N64 version of RE2 had to use some custom made black magic compression algorithm to fit the game in a cartridge.
>>
>>336285505
>shit was deep in the uncanny valley

You don't know what uncanny valley means, do you?

>Or FF8 even.

FF8 looked great actually, still has IMO the best summon animations and designs in the series, the latter ones were overdesigned as fuck.
>>
>>336285821
Why didn't they just split the cartridge like Playstation did with disks? were cartridges to expensive to make or what?
>>

Still unbelievable they pulled it off with the compression technology at the time.

correct me if i'm wrong, but if nintendo went with cds for the n64, the textures would still suck right?

i think i remember hearing about some small amount of texture ram
>>
>>336286747
It'd be even worse, since most devs streamed textures off the cartridge as a workaround. Using CDs makes that impossible.

this
ps1 lacks true 3d through a true z-buffer. Some games ran one through software or did other tricks to minimize the impact.

n64's issues were that it used catridges and one of the cache's for textures was tiny, I believe with them opting for speed over capacity.

That's silly. Most PS1 games look downright awful today because all the jaggies are just ugly. N64 may have had simpler shapes, but it looked much better in return.
>>
>>336287771
That's pretty unfair, plus Crash shows a lot less on the screen at a time.

>>336289306
N64 had blurrier textures, worse sound, and ran a lot of games at a completely shit frame rate. Like really, in Smash and SF Rush the framerate would frequently dip into the lower teens and could get to 10 fps without much effort, I don't remember any PS1 game having that bad of framerate issues.

At this point it really boils down to what you grew up with and what you're used to. The texture popping never really bothered me on the PS1 but for some reason the really bleh textures on the N64 stand out really harshly to me.

>>336286736
Spyro also didn't have that distant fog nonsense that a ton of N64 games had.
>>
>>336290412
You can't tell me you play a game like Resident Evil today and not get eye cancer.
>>
Playstation lasted almost twice as long as the N64, and pretty much any PSX game released after 1999 blows anything on the N64 out of the water completely
>>
>>336290940
The RE games actually aged decent better than most 3D games of the time, especially 2.
