SM64 had fun swimming though.
The rest were shit.

bad controls aside, OP,
I found it, along with the music; pretty damn atmospheric.
One of the things about Super Mario 64 that always stuck in my mind as being magical and atmospheric about Super Mario 64 after all these years since playing it at my cousin's house

good lord this board really is shit
Why is it that whenever there's a shell powerup, it's usually the most fun to use?

Water levels are ALWAYS shit, no matter what game they are from.

It's alright but I wish the turning circle was a little smaller, and make turning around at least a little faster. That Fugu boss sucked ass though.
I wish there were more levels that were half water/half land rather than the 5 or 6 fully underwater levels.

Said no one ever.Well, I did enjoy Ristar's swimming levels, but that's just one fucking game and a swell one at that.Presumably someone may have said this about Ecco.
>>336276490
Rayman Origins and Legends had good swimming.
>>336273534
SM64 had legit fun swimming levels.
Swimming levels are only unfun in specific games where its an unwanted gimmick like MGS2 or TLoU.
>>336276303
>autistm comes exclusively from Sonic fanbase
not gonna deny it's a pretty deep hole there
but lurk moar. Every fanbase for popular things has crazy fetishists, and no fanbase is entirely perfect "tru fans" or exempt from this rule

You're playing as a short muscled as fuck fat man, the fuck did you expect.
>>336276269
I didn't know that because I haven't played DKCR. I avoided it because of the controls
>>336276721
Why do things in Mario need to make logical sense when it makes things less fun

I can't think of one game where I enjoyed the water segments more than the land or air segments.

>underwater controls
>bad
It's underwater controls are some of the best I've seen 3D games do. Animations are simple, fluid and Mario goes at a good speed if you know how. What 3D games do it better?
>>336276330
....which is?
>>336277430
I thought Banjo-Tooie's were pretty good once you talked to Roysten.
>>336277115
Those are alright. Personally I like last bosses that consist entirely of QTEs. It's really cinematic and an excellent way to end the game

>>336273534
Galaxy 2 and 3D Land/World were flawless
>>336277115
They're usually the best parts of those particular games.
>>336273534
Jolly Roger Bay and Dire Dire Docks were two of the best levels in that game.
Really bad example.
>>336279996
Careful, naming specific levels can get you pegged for Autism, mate
>>336273534
Mario 64 had one of the first 3D water simulations ever.
It was amazing.Until Wave Race 64 came out.
>>336280905
>wave race
I miss that game
>>336277430
>What 3D games do it better?
Twilight Princess HD does it really good with the Zora Tunic when you get the rhythm down.
>>336273534
So very true. I've noticed that any underwater level in mario maker gets siginificantly less plays than land levels. If you want people to play your water level, you have to make them think its a land level (sub level is water)
>>336281023
That Japanese arcade aesthetic.

>>336274145
>I found it, along with the music; pretty damn atmospheric.
This. SM64 was fucking magical to me, and the fact that you could swim freely in a 3D environment was freaking amazing. It was like flying.
Of course it's not as amazing nowadays.
>>336279996
>Jolly Roger Bay
Maybe
>Dire Dire Docks
Hell no, swimming through a tube 5 times just so you can get to the area with all the stars ain't fun.
>>336281087
Unless HD changed the underwater controls, Twilight Princess was alright but not exciting. Super Mario 64 felt good to control underwater. That game in general is one of the most fun to control games ever.
>>336283845
thanks for taking that straight, it was my intention.
And I share your sentiment there. No game has ever been able to recreate that feeling for me that the water stages in Super Mario 64 did.
The most iconic part to me is when you don the Metal cap and sink deep into the water, and then when it wears off, swimming along the bottom while the music plays. But one of my favorite other parts regarding underwater segments is the hidden window in the castle that takes you to the underwater room where you can see 4 different times of day on each side of the room outside. That was fucking incredible
>>336273534
Well, at least the music is cozy.
Am I the only one that doesn't have trouble in water levels?
>>336285357
Nah I love underwater levels.
Even Labyrinth Zone.
>yada yada disruptive ludo narrative dissonance yada yada
In other words
>some parts of the game have to be bad in order for you to completely appreciate the good ones
Is this statement true?
>>336273534
The swimming in the Galaxy games was actually pretty solid, especially with the turtle shell.
>>336286357
Tbh I liked that "stealth" section because it reminded me of Metal Gear a bit (not unlike the jungle's aesthetic in 2).
game devs have to know underwater mechanics are unfun, why do they put them in games anyway?

Its under water controls are still ass.
>>336275234
This.
People might not be able to apreciate them or even get used to them on their first run, but the underwater levels here are pretty well done, and DK controls great.
>>336273534
>Not liking the parts of Mario Galaxy where you get the green shell while you swim
>>336273534
64 and Galaxy did it right. Sunshine's swimming was garbage and the 1-Up Studio games' swim mechanics is just a clunkier version of 2D Mario's swim mechanics since 3.
As far as 2D Mario games go, they're not bad but games where a power-up or item makes the process less daunting would be preferred.Wario's swimming controls handle better, though
>I love the 3d Mario games!
Said no sane person ever.
>>336276303

>the sequence of Peach leaving the door from Super Show's intro
What?
>>336276958
I wouldn't say "tame" but I will say they have more to work with.
Some Sonic fans are self aware enough to have a laugh. Yoshi stuff on the other hand, it's just creepy no matter how you spin it. I feel sorry for Shigefumi Hino, knowing his most notable creature design is his most shameful one.
I loved the swimming parts in Mario, Banjo, and Zelda. I love going under water in video games, and I always will.
>>336289645
If they're ass they're fun ass.Them being shit is like, your opinion, man.

Mario 3 had fun underwater levels.
>>336289949
For the most part I liked them, but I don't feel like all the water levels were equally good. Current Capers and Deep Keep were both pretty boring, and Shoal Atoll might be the worst stage in the game. Meanwhile, Amiss Abyss and Irate Eight are among the best in the game.
>>336273534
They were great back in 64. They were comfy as fuck.
