Helghan Corporation was one of the big organizations colonizing planets, they colonize a planet which they named Vekta. Was super rich in resources and shit. They decide to break off from Earth and be their own thing, and would tax up their own resources from their planet.
So Earth, and the ISA corporation, invade and take over Vekta and kick the Helghans off to a shit planet with atmosphere that kills most of them. They much later come back, after adapting to the planet, and try to take back their planet.
They get fended off in the first game. Then in the second game you invade Helghan itself, and in the end kill their leader. In the third game you actually just blow up the fucking planet.
In Shadow Fall, the Helghan refugees are herded into shitholes and have sanctions up the ass restricting them further. The ISA were developing a tool to kill all Helghans via some bioweapon, and while I forget what happens to that, at the end you play as a Helghast assassin and kill the ISA top dog.

Helgans were forced to retreat to Helghan where they basically mutated to adapt to it's climates. They had everything stolen from them and wanted revenge. Their whole planet was fucked up in the end because "lol fuck you Helgans". They had civilians and normal civilization but the UCN didn't care.

Mercs you are just a Merc, no alliance. The villain of Mercs is actually an arms dealer fueling both sides of the war to profit. You kill both ISA and Helghasts in that IIRC
