It sold OK at the start, but not huge amounts. Not as badly as the huge or the bone but it did fine for itself in the end.
Jap devs like MS because Sony and Nintendo were really bad with development support for a long time while MS was the opposite. They also supported a ton of smaller studios at the time like SNK, CAVE, FROM, Artoon et all along with the big ones and some were given the chances of doing big 1st party games they wouldn't normally have got. J Allard even went so far as to say they were going to fund Japanese 360 games, even if the console didn't perform well in Japan because Japan was important to the industry. They stuck out because it was globally doing well and 360 was significantly easier to develop on.

Reading about Seamus Blackley doing some crazy red eye hours just to make sure they had Japanese developer support after the MS Japan branch they set up had no clue and Mikami walked out on them during talks for the "Capcom 5" was crazy. That era MS really loved Japan and even went out of their way to get SNK games on the console by implementing online themselves instead of putting ridiculous restrictions on them like Sony and Nintendo did.
The problem is now it's an uphill battle because the market for weebgames is constantly swinging between PS4 and PC and no one can justify investing except the Stranger Of Sword City devs because they are crazy.
