I found the AI got a little better as I got further, and I also did my best to not rely on it.

I've seen worse and at least they're were manageable in Ni no Kuni
I just gave them all the strongest familiars so they only focused on attacking while I healed, made things a lot easy for me

That's really just cause you probably don't know his hit %'s in the beginning.
If you focus on the legs and teeny hands you'll do like 2-3x the damage of going for the head and horns, plus it makes it so much easier to get trips when he starts helicoptering, for easy hump hits which have like 65%+ zones

This asshole. He's no problem in his weaker forms, but his omega randomly shows up in one of the most trafficked areas of the game, and needs a specialized folder built to effectively fight him early on. I'm usually too ballsy to run, so he can eat a couple minutes of playtime if I'm not careful.

you can manage their health on your own
and you're able to to cammand them to defend when you get to a certain part of the game
I think you, and like any of us who played the game, had a bad fight where the AI did some dumb things and costed you the battle
It's all about preparation and being good at micromanaging your party

The AI isn't exactly "bad" because if you give them certain familiars, they will actually do competent things with them.
But it's a whole lotta trial and error with it, especially when the game doesn't tell you that the characters have an affinity with certain types of familiars unless you really look into the ingame manual and that you don't unlock all your options until a good 10-20 hours into the game which makes replaying the game a pain in the ass.
but yea, the ai is bad, until a certain point in the game.
