Quick question for any Yakuza fans
Finally got around to buying a ps3, already ordered Yakuza 3 and 4 on amazon but they won't be arriving for 2 weeks
A friend of mine has Dead Souls and my question is can I play this game without having played 3 and 4? I know it's a non-canon spinoff but still, will I understand what's going on (like whos the guy on the left) and more importantly will I get spoiled?

Not many Yakuza fans on /v/ today it seems..
Find some other cool PS3 game to tide you over until then. Nier for example.
The best thing about it is the fanservice which won't be nearly as entertaining if you haven't already played the other games.
Dead Souls is actually quite fun fanservice game. I expected the worse and was surprised how fun it turned out. It has some flaws for sure but it isn't that bad.
And yeah, it's better to play 3 and 4 before because it's kinda alternative sequel to 4.

Pretty much, just like how Yakuza Kenzan is a fan service game. I'm surprised no one ever mentions the PSP games.
There's not even much point in playing 3 to be honest. You might as well just play 4 and 5 because they are intended as starting points for new players.
That being said, ALL yakuza games come with a reminisce option where they recap each of the previous games in like 15 minutes a piece.

Ishin COULD theoretically happen considering SEGA is now willing to go full digital for releases on consoles. If we get Y6 and Kiwami it'll set a good track record provided they sell. Not to mention Kiwami would be an excellent entry point for new players to the series.

I liked the hostess stuff in 5. They changed it up a bit so that there's both more variety involved mechanics-wise and also made each route less of a grind. The routes themselves basically being glorified substories helped too (this sort of was the case in earlier games too, it's done better in 5 though)

Yeah, it was definitely much better than in 4. I fucking hated how many girls was there and how you only do the same things over and over again with them. And you even get three more fucking girls after completing hostess club shit... In 5 it was actually really comfy to just sit there and let girl talking.

Maybe, but not earlier than 2018.
Start with PS2 ones, you can emulate them.
If you can't emulate the PS2 games for whatever reason, start at 3 or 4. 4's a better starting point due to being more self-contained overall but plenty of people get by fine starting at 3 too, they both have the option to watch summaries of previous games.
Don't start at 5 because it relies heavily on the events of 4.

Is Yakuza Ishin worth playing? I liked 4 but I don't know how the samurai twist on the game changed its dynamics.

I miss Hamil-chan's performance. In fact, Yakuza dub was very competent, but I'd say its problem was trying to stay too faithful to original Japanese script. Kazuma also sounds like hard boiled badass in English, it took me a while to adapt to his Japanese VA in Yakuza 2 who definitely has more range and expresses it better.

Its not pure garbage, for a person who never played any yakuza games, this game actually put the good taste of "Yakuza" series registered permanently in my mouth.
For a zombie shooter ? its bad, but for PS3 ? its worth picking up. I replayed the shit outta it trying to unlock all the fucking items or loots.
Binary Domain is a next level shooter from them by their standards, probably on par of Gears Of War although the story is mediocre.

I think a lot of people went into it expecting Japanese GTA and got disappointed. If anything, it's closer to how Mafia did it aka more story-heavy and open world isn't really there for you to fuck around in, it's there for story purposes. I can also imagine a lot of the Japanese culture or whatever was lost on people.

Currently on Haruka's chapter in Y5. It's amazing fun after the tediousness of Saejima's. I couldn't wait to get out of the woods. Probably the worst part of any Yakuza game.
Not a fan of J Pop but it's so colourful and upbeat it's difficult to dislike.
I can't help but think that multiple protagonists has run its course now though.
