The bottom fell out of the Japanese market a long time ago. All that can survive these days is generic JRPG trash and fanservice games.
For all the shit the west gets about morons playing Candy Crush and Clash of Kings, Japan is worse. Difficulty in games is something they've always been adverse to, JRPGs are basically the progenitors of mobage trash. Simplistic systems, combat that requires no thought, just watch the numbers go up forever until you kill the final boss.
The wonderfully creative market that gave us titles like Umihara Kawase, LSD, and Devil Dice is long dead, driven out by rising costs that killed the idea of the one man development studio.
The few surviving examples from that era are bloated, lazy carcasses like Hideo Kojima and his unending quest to write shitty B-movie games that are somehow taken seriously by the completely pre-pubescent industry with a writing quality below that of network TV.
Nothing will save gaming. Appeasing the niche has been replaced with junk food software for the masses, who have such low expectations that they'll declare trash like TLoU and Undertale GoTY.
