Hey /v/, I'm developing an online trading card game called Forgotten Lore. The big thing in the game is that every single card is a unique Steam Inventory item that is both tradable and marketable with no strings attached (except for the starter deck).

Same as last week: Posting a batch of keys for people to snatch up to start off. Post steam profile url if you want me to just drop the game in your account (you won't get a notification, it will just show up in your library). Anyways.

The game is kind of a mix between video game pokemon and hearthstone, gameplay wise. You build your tome (deck) out of pages (cards). You can put the pages into different types of tomes for different gameplay styles.

For example, one is Leech. It's a pretty basic tome that sucks 1 HP each turn, but gives you 2 Souls (mana) in exchange. Another is Mill, which does not give or take anything each turn. Instead, you sacrifice cards in your hand to get Souls whenever you please.

There are a bunch of different skills and status effects, like poison, freeze, etc. You attack the other player's tome until it's HP is 0 to win.

Looks like it picked you up that time, anon. And the game is very much not RNG focused. I know a lot of cards in Hearthstone are shit like "hit x amount of damage to a random x cards" - this isn't in our game at all. Really trying to avoid it as much as possible.

It's pretty much "generic fantasy" with my own little twists thrown in. The lore is still a WIP (its a few dozen pages I've been keeping around for awhile) - the core is pretty set in stone but a lot has room for change. Art is pretty consistent I think, save for the variance between slight difference between the different artists.

I played 1 game against the bot, and it is all pretty smooth. A few suggestions:
1. Remove the "friends list" in the main menu. Takes up too much space for nothing, its just a click away. Less is more here, so having no buttons there would be better.
2. The little "lore" should be optionally visible for the cards. First place players look at when they see the card is the very centre. The corners give them info about the stats, and all the status effects should be in the middle. Having the status effects on the side causes the eye to go back and forth between the right side and the corners of the card, whereas having it in the middle lets the peripherals take care of the stats, letting the eye just stare at the middle. This will sound stupid to 90% of /v/ here because they are underage, but as a game designer, I am sure you understand how important these little details are in your game. After all, looking at cards is most of your game in general. Making that smoother will make the whole game smoother.
3. Make the "soul counter" more visible, not just a number. It is kinda lost right now between all the numbers because it is right in the middle of your deck. Putting it below or above in some other visiual form would be better. Some geometric forms maybe? A line that is getting filled? A combination of both like in HS (stars+ in a line)
4. Magnify the stats of the cards that are on the board. At the point after being played, both (somewhat experienced) players will know what the cards do with their status effects, and the only information the board really provides is the updated stats (health, freeze, reduced/improved attack etc.) As such, they should be more emphasized, so that a quick glance will give an idea what card to attack instead of really looking into each card to see how much health it has. Again, not that it takes more than half a second, but in games like this, you should strive towards a faster information exchange between the player and the game.

Thanks for the feedback, anon. I appreciate it. I pretty much agree with everything you posted. Not sure about the friends list, I know at the very least I should probably only make it display who is actually in game, but it will be nice for inviting friends to a duel who aren't in game.

Well it's exactly what Valve does with every steam trading card being sold. So in a way it's being done in a huge scale right now, and that's probably a reason why smaller devs don't do it. They either don't think they can get into this market because of this, or Valve doesn't allow it.

OP, give the cards a more distinctive border from the rest of the card. Most TCGs give a strong black or white borders to give a good contrast from the rest of the image and make them stand out from whatever the play surface is. Don't know how it'd fit with your parchment motif though.

Are you going to have instants in your game? Or do you generally share the same policy as Hearthstone in that there should be absolutely no off-turn interaction?

I'd also like to weigh in with my preference, I just enjoy really crazy interactions with sound logic. I also enjoy alternate win conditions like that other anon has said. No preference for RNG or not, so long as it's not too stupid or swingy. I don't expect you to take all my preferences into account, but thought I'd mention it.

MtG is a great game but the MTGO client is complete fucking garbage and the EV on events since the market crash is trash.

Duelyst is okay, but they literally cannot balance the game and the core mechanics make genuine counterplay near impossible. Seriously, it copies way too much of the terrible shit from Hearthstone.

I'll be honest and agree with you for now. At the moment I'd say the game is "bland." Nothing really pops at the moment.
But this is early access and it's free at the moment so that doesn't bother me as much as the mechanics. Dragons and spiders are game winning and it seems that once you're down you're probably not going to come back, especially if they have a dragon due to the low amount of resource game per turn. Mill seems really weak since you give up card options for essentially the same amount of resources (or less) than players with leech.
Then again, that's due to the very low card pool at the moment. I assume with going forward that cards will be added that will alleviate these issues. I do commend them for avoiding the problem of too much shit going on the battle field that f2p card games tend to have.

The bot is dumb as bricks and it's near impossible to find a match.

The first and only person I played against rage quit after turn 4, so I waited 5 minutes and nothing happened, the game was just stuck. So I left the game and that counted as a loss.

Not saying it's a bad idea, just one that I'm not used to seeing. The zatch bell tcg had a similar mechanic to what you guys are doing if I remember correctly. You used a book, turned the pages and used the cards on that page. You had to play cards to gain resources to play other cards and you didn't have a recurring resource generator.

Easiest and quickest fix is just to let the opponent's turn clock keep running even if they leave. It takes a while to kill them, but it's better than rage quit = game stalls forever.

Already I don't like the stats. The battling is just a slow and grindy slugfest. I can't get into it at all. In any card game I've played, battles are very simple and decisive. Pretty sure MTG defenders have to be picked,and if they don't die, then they will return to full health. So killing enemy cards will happen in a single battle phase. Yugioh is just simple attack comparison, so cards that battle will have a winner decided immediately. Hearthstone has stats that are very simple and easy to follow, mostly you have cards that 1 for 1, very rarely are you trying to do more than 2 for 1 and even then, the minion will very usually die on that turn.

Almost any card game the stats are easy to follow and are decisive. In this game the poison builds up, the freeze stays for long periods of time too. Also not sure what taunt means.

It requires way too much thinking ahead than I would like to do. And even if you did put the thought into it, you couldn't really anticipate the kinds of cards your opponent will play, which leads me to think there might not be any fast effects.

That's just how I feel anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing you guys do well,

It's okay, honestly there's no point to running anything but 3 Dragons, 3 Spiders, 3 Healers and 3 Souls. Everything else is way below their power level. Ogres seem good at first, but Taunt only protects you, not your creatures. Gavin is okay, but I don't see why you'd play him over Dragons.
