There are official and unofficial progression servers.
You'll find a sizeable amount of people are still passionate about the game, and will take you under their wing as long as you're willing to make up for what for some people may be 15 years of experience with the game.

There's a few Wurm Unlimited servers going that have a dedicated group of like... 30-40 people.

The servers fill to the brim with """ebin trolls""" and shitters who aren't interested in anything but fucking around for a few days. In this period the devs are lucky if some of these cucks throw a few bucks in their begging-jar before leaving next week to the next victim.
Everyone who used to play the game is screwed over by server-prices, server latency, merges, newfags and "wow was first mmo".

I'm still in favor of at least Buy2Play with cash shop, which I believe can be done without making you grind for years. People who use the cash shop usually do it to avoid any amount of grind, be that 2 months or 2 days worth.

After that they start selling "a little old gear", like a few tiers away.

I'm reminded of something from years ago when I tried Anarchy Online; I made my way to the first player city and someone with a green name above their head ran up to me. Turns out they were a moderator and they went out of their way to say "welcome to the game" and stuff. Another player I met the same day gave me some dosh to buy some pistols that were substantially better than the starter ones.
Makes me feel guilty that I didn't play much after that :(
