DS version has some worse controls, and the extra playable characters are kind of hamfisted in; you have to start as Yoshi, Mario is practically mandatory, Luigi breaks the game, and Wario is nearly useless. They took out the Metal and Vanish cap switches and spread those powers among the cast.
There are more stars to collect and a few more stages for them though, on top of some kickass minigames, but you might as well play the original.

Not him, but I had an N64 and never played Mario 64 until the DS version came out. I played Banjo Kazooie and Tooie, but I didn't get Mario 64 because I just never thought to ask for it.
At the time there was Pokemon, and fucking tons of games on the Gameboy, and even more on the way with the Gameboy Color. Not to mention all of the games I got to play on the N64, Sega Genesis and Playstation. There were games to play back then. Actual fun games, so many that it felt like you couldn't even get to playing them all.

Both are worth a try. SM64's physics are pretty enjoyable and allow for a lot of player expression, I know the DS iteration changes Mario's walljumping to be easier for situations that need it and I'm not sure if it fucks around with the physics compared to 64
