I almost forgot: Resonance of Fate. Half the game is slice-of-life for a trio of mercenaries, and their secret backstories are super interesting. I think it's the first game I played where a character has a good reason to be angsty all the time. (Which I can spoil if you want)

play ultima vii: serpent isle (not the original game, the expansion). they aren't close in terms of engine capabilities, depth, combat etc. ultima iv is very very antique

I like it a lot but understand why someone else might not. It's clearly a really early ps2 game and has some jank going on. It's also more challenging and much darker, though, which I really appreciate. much lower budget and less clean looking but it's also more pure video game, if that makes sense.
DC2 is comfy and really well polished with voiced cutscenes, a distinct artstyle and a feel good ghibli movie kind of story, not to mention loaded with unbelievable amounts of content but it's also really easy. Some of its content is skippable too, and not worth the time imo. Fish racing, some of the medals and monster transformation come to mind, but the rest is tons of fun.
DC1 is dark, challenging and doesn't hold your hand as much, but this means you can sometimes get lost if things don't make sense or they don't give you enough information. The balance is also kind of off for some of the characters. Still really good but harder to recommend.

See if you can spot the similarities between it and Dark Souls. You might be surprised.
