Tell me about Armored Core, /v/.I like mecha but the only good mecha games are Zone of Enders and they don't make 'em like those no more. I have a PS3.
I like heavy customization games like armored core 4/4a where multiple play styles, builds, and loadouts are viable and encouraged for players to enjoy. I'm apparently cancerous to armored core.

I've only played Silent Line, 3, Nexus and Last Raven. They're mech-head customization heavy games. You play as a mercenary in a war between corporations and the story is told via news reports and articles that detail the war as you complete missions for these corporations. The combat for the PS2 ones is apparently slower but more grounded (figuratively and literally) than 4/4A.
Play Nexus first, most reasonable difficulty curve and solid mechanics all around, then challenge yourself with Last Raven. Unforgiving but god damn if it isn't satisfying.

To that end, I love armored core because you can fine tune your AC to your specifications and what you like and your play style. I got into a heated argument with someone here who hates 4 and 4a who disliked it because it "ruined" the series because lightweight high mobile ACS were viable. In my opinion, more options for more choices in gameplay is better. 4a is better than 4 really.

They are slower. I played 2 and another age and still enjoyed them as a lightweight and medium AC preferring player. You have to do the damn player+ shit though to be totally viable which is a shame.

4a has more and is the better game in almost every respect. It's going to be an adjustment though if you've never played the series, since there's a lot of parts to your AC to understand like FCS (fire control system) generator, booster, over boost, in addition to understanding basic external leg, arm, core, and head parts. Energy consumption, energy use, all these things have to be considered and what they will impact.

4 & 4a made high mobility viable at the expense of everything else. Why bother with tank treads when you'll still be jetting around like a ballerina anyway. V & VD brought back and accentuated the class differences but also had to include a dumb Rock, paper, scissor defense that didn't really add anything.

I should add that you can't just say, "this is the best most upgraded part in this slot.". There are a few trash parts, mostly economy parts and straight upgrades. But mostly you have to judge pros and cons like weight, energy consumption, energy usage where applicable, and so on as I said. That said, that is part of the fun. You aren't upgrading RPG characters in this. You are building and tuning machines with tight tolerances and perform based on your specifications. Very few games do this.

4a really did focus on boosting a lot. Might be why I liked it. In 2 and AA I enjoyed tuning for energy efficiency. Tank parts have been known to eat power if memory serves, making them not good for sustained boosting. You want to keep energy consumption low if you want to maximize your generators ability to recharge and to reduce how much energy various energy consuming actions can do. If you're near the generators output limit, you're going to have limited use. Using less of that output gives you better efficiency. But I don't have to tell you this.

I've tried it, but I honestly can't recommend it. It's got the taste of early access all over it, with bad framerates, an incomplete singleplayer, awkward gameplay, gimmicky missions, and overall it's terribly optimized. Yes yes, early access, but it's been 2+ years. They're still suffering from basic mistakes.

start with 3, and if you like it move on to 4 and 5
as for customization, you get to mix and match:
torso
legs
L arm
R arm
L weapon
R weapon
L shoulder weapon
R shoulder weapon
backpack
but you can't throw anything together willy nilly, your torso has a base 'power output' stat and every other part has a weight. the total weight of your other parts cant exceed the power output of the main body. so, it's more or less like AC but a little less complicated
aside from mech customization you can customize pilot skill loadouts, and in 4 and 5, links that allow certain pilots to attack or defend simultaneously under certain circumstances
someone help me, I want to play more mecha games but I fear that I will not enjoy any other mecha title ever again the way I enjoyed AC4A
