The souls series was programmed by chinks in a sweatshop so the code is garbage and it's prone to abuse from hackers. This guy is messing with other players stats but in a really obvious way so the server interprets it as cheating and has them banned. If you're banned for cheating you get sent to special cheater's server where you can still play the game but you'll only ever connect with other "cheaters".
That's apparently the jist of it.

PC version of the game is pretty much ruined now, anybody who go to Cheat Engine forums can download the table Malcolm used, now there are reports of at least a dozen hackers doing the same. Multiplayer is kill, what's even worse is that even if you decide to play it offline you'll get softbanned eventually because From is incopetent and when you login back after a session of offline play the game will recognize everything you got from the offline play as ilegitimate.

You can play offline while still using embers m8, there's an option in the menu to change the game to offline. Also everytime you kill a boss you get an ember automatically, which means if you're not careful you might get invaded all the same.
