Do you miss the Arcade scene?

Dumb nostalgiatards and underage faggots who don't realize how obscenely expensive they were.

Not really.

>meanwhile, in Japan...

>>336152508

>obscenely expensive

Are you stupid or something? You can get 20 games/plays/turns/whatever for just 5$. Do you know how much 5$ is? People with minimum wage jobs can make almost twice as much in an hour. And don't give me the "hurr durr it's more expensive now!" No it's not, fuck you. Every arcade I've been to in the last few years is still 25 cents per machine, with a few exceptions to 50 cent games, and those weird 1.00$ racing ones.
>>
>>336152508
When I was going to arcades my parents/grandparents paid for them I don't care.
>>
>>336152884
federal minimum wage in america is 7.25 and people get taxed on top of that
>>
>>336152884
>You can get 20 games/plays/turns/whatever for just 5$.
That is complete bullshit. Any of the decent games cost a buck to play at least.
>>
>>336152987
that said .25 in 1988 money is worth .50 now so it might be far to say that quarter eaters just aren't an economically feasible way to extract cash from kids
>>
>>336152987

So let's just say you're taxed down to 5$ (which you're not, but let's just say that). You then have enough money to equate to my example. Are you trying to tell me 1 hour of work for that much shit at the arcade is "obscenely expensive?" And beyond that, how about just not working a minimum wage job? 5$ for some fun like once a week or so is incredibly cheap. You pay just as much if not more for lunch or dinner literally every day. Is eating food obscenely expensive?

>>336153018

No it's not. I don't know where you live, but literally all the arcades near me charge .25/.50. Literally none of the games I have seen cost a whole dollar
>>
There's a giant arcade / bar / Chuck-E-Cheese's sort of place in downtown Seattle. It's mostly for kids though, and their parents.
A large portion of the area is just a few rows of gaming PCs, consoles with couches, and other stuff.
You can buy time cards which will give unlimited access to all of this for a pretty reasonable rate, you just swipe your card rather than inserting a coin.

To be honest the arcade scene is more of a 'you gotta use your hands, that's a baby's toy' sort of thing now, but even if it weren't, we'd all be way too old for it.

Yes, but they're an impossible business model to maintain anymore.

I play fighting games a lot, they're my favorite kind of game. And the arcade scene was really important in forming the competitive scene for those games. They were important for gathering people from all over, creating friendships and rivalries, and helping the gameplay of said games reach a higher and higher level. But they're now easily replaced by what are more or less LAN centers or game bars, and most of the tech/discoveries about fighting games can now be done much more easily on the internet. Hell, most players prefer to play from home instead of travelling to an event.

Even in Japan, arcades are closing left and right. Arcade machines have become too expensive for the amount of revenue they bring in, even the ones which can be used for multiple games like the Nesica machines. And it sucks.
>>
>>336152241

It was cool getting a sneak peek at what would be hitting consoles eventually. I miss being able to go play stuff like Tekken and the Mortal Kombats before they were ported. Also some games (like Rush and Crazy Taxi) just aren't the same at home.

I know there are like 2 or 3 modern arcades down in Austin only been to one small arcade though and it was great. Wish this shit was more popular and in more active areas

Yep, my team just recently went there as a company event sort of thing. A couple of people went to the DDR stands, some of the others were playing arcade games and such, but most of the older guys were just sitting alone at the bar waiting for it to be over. Definitely not an all-ages sort of thing.

There were a couple of kids there with their parents, and some older kids were at the LAN area, but beyond that, not a lot of people there. Maybe it's busier on weekends?

Imagine what could have been.

Walk into your local arcade, pay a buck to use thousands of dollar's worth of VR equipment. An exoskeleton, an omni-treadmill, a headset, a fuck-off powerful PC to run it all, some set-up that you could never afford that offer an amazing and unique experience.

But it will never be.

Sadly they make more money then any DDR. The guy behind how D&B adds machines did a Reddit AMA Saying:

>Namco Bandai were hesitant to add a pokken location test as Tekken didn't do well
>Only Rhythm game that do well we're really DDR/PIU/ITG, and compared to redemption, they make little
>He thinks that Round 1 isn't really what they can strive for and said he believed they were forcing Konami and other's hand to allow them to import the cabinets due to their power
>They were in talks of a DDR 2015 location test, not sure on how that eneded out
>Beatmania was too complex and didn't make a lot
>Redemption is pretty much the main dough maker
>No actual rhythm plans

Fightcade &to a lower extent GGPO both have fighting game lobbies & Windjammers. You can also do other games, but you might need to work a little bit, but not A LOT (it consists of making a large credit save state with both players already in the select screen and sending it to the other player.)

This one guy at my local arcade used to dominate everyone in VS fighting games, but when I would play against him he would try to teach me my characters' moves. Started playing against him at 10 years old in XMen vs Street Fighter and continued all the way to MvC2. I never won, but he wouldn't go all out against me like everyone else. Based black dude really

I never went to too many arcades myself, but the games were designed to be easy to get into. I got into a bunch of games from a copy of MAME someone uploaded to my school's network with a shitload of RoMs. that and stuff like the Neo-Geo humble bundle.

You could probably check /vr/ for recommendations as well. Just try shit out, at the very least.

>>
>>336164297

>>336162940 here, to be honest IIDX isn't as welcoming to newcomers to the American rhythm games. The timing requirements are very strict, so that puts people down, it's Japanese as well, so you have to find your way around. The songs also aren't really relatable compared to Guitar Hero and Rock Band. You shouldn't really say it's the players that are the problem, as there are are to fix that. Also the only game I know that is like it is DJ hero, which is pretty different. There hasn't been anything really like it. Not to mention the Grade System being weird (Clears and Ranks not really matching)

Old fag here (35).
They weren't that bad if you actually could play. I use to hit the local arcade as a kid with my 2 brothers and a few friends. We would literally spend all day there with just $20. We did it like every single Saturday.
