The Adventure games are mediocre
Sonic 2 and Generations were fantastic despite having nothing plots.
The issue with Sonic is that it should either have a cheesy bad shonen storyline or just not have one at all. The recent thing they're doing with the Happy Tree Friends writers where there's still a bunch of cutscenes despite having the tone of a children's cartoon is pretty lame.
Either do what Mario and Kirby do where you just slap on an intro, mid-game and ending cutscene or go all in on dumb story shit. They're trying to have it both ways and it doesn't really work.
The Sonic trilogy is the best plot on any platformer. Shit actually felt "epic" and grand.

I have tried CD just but a few weeks ago and I cannot believe I have never experienced such a fun Sonic game that I overlooked because it was "oldie"

The stages were fast paced ,which modern Sonic games do not capture anymore. Well, Unleashed captured that feeling, but had to add that nasty werewolf gameplay. I have not played Colors but heard it was good.
Having a good decent story such as Sonic Battle really does help, but I don't think it was much of the plot of the game (which was pretty simple) but how enjoyable and entertaining character interactions were in the game, especially when Knuckles was taking care of Emerl.
For Sonic games, gameplay and music are a first, then comes the story, and then any fun optional gimmicks (such as the Chao gardens in Adventure and Advance games)
