When people talk about SMT, they usually mean a mainline SMT game.

Look into 1-4 and Strange Journey.

Digital Devil Saga is fantastic, but it does have a slow start. All of the PS2 SMT games are guilty of taking a while to get off the ground. Game doesn't really start until you get to the Maribel Base, and doesn't get really good until Mick's Fortress.

SMT is just more of a niche franchise. It does some interesting things but also fucks a lot of shit up. Whereas FF7 is a great classic video game, and literally the baseline for the JRPG genre.

Pretty much everyone who likes SMT has also played FF7. On the other hand, only a fraction of the people who have played and liked an FF game have even heard of SMT.
