I don't understand the point of these "lets glitch the fuck otta this game" speedruns. Where's the fun in that? So, you technically '''''''''''beat'''''''''''' the game but essentially making the code divide by zero, good job retard.
I remember watching one of the first 2hr long speedruns and it was fun as heck, and had some insane display of skill

If you don't think watching someone slingshot through a level in ways you thought were impossible is a spectacle then there really isn't a lot to discuss here.

Because it's interesting to see just what makes a game tick, the best speedruns have a commentary that explain why they are doing each action (like hitting points to make the level load or whatever) and how they are doing it.

Just like TAS with or withoutout glitches are entertaining to see what theoretical perfect gameplay would look like.

Do people still get excited for TAS runs?
It is just like the disgusting scriptfags who think they are good at kz ing cause they use keybinds to get perfect timings on their jumps.
>>
>>336146051
No one liked Dark Souls speedruns when they pull this shit. DS1 speedrun skipped 70% of the game to glitch through the door into the final area and DS2 speedrun just involved glitching through everything and running infinitely fast. Once those 2 things were patched, speedrunners seemed just fine with working with the new verisons.

>>336146374

>>
>>336141593
The HL speedrun was much hyper than this. This is just glitching through walls and floating, HL had some truly insane shit. It was faster too thanks to less scripted setpieces in the game.
>>
>>336146221
It's kind of true man. HL2's speedruns boil down to glitch to the top of the map and run straight, use physical items to hop over walls and out of bounds, use models to make NPCs skip walking/animations, and one portion of the game where you have to defend Mossman and Eli, and that one portion where you're captured by Breen.

It's still fun to watch but HL1's speedrun is WAY better for entertainment value.

His skill at tetris is impressive, but it's not a speedrun; it's entirely down to RNG from the first block.

It's an exhibition that at this point serves to draw in viewers (those who haven't already seen the myriad of advanced tetris videos out there) and nothing but.
Same category as the TASbot meme runs that reprogram the game internally.

Important question: Is this TAS or is this legit?

TAS is literally cheating.
>>
>>336147946
I think they serve completely different purposes. A segmented run like this is a finished product, of sorts, created for demonstration and generally showing off, not for competition with other players like a single segment or IL run.

TAS'es are like this too. They're created, not performed.

there's room for both if you grok the point of either

Says who? You? Drop dead, buddy. You probably can't even get pass the first speed.

I'm gonna assume you're not baiting and just sincerely ignorant and define what "cheating" means for you, ok?

Cheating means to do something unfair or dishonest in order to gain an advantage. TAS'ing does no such thing, since it's fucking clearly labelled and you're not even competing against anyone when you do a TAS, it's a demonstration, a showcase, that sort of thing.

Claiming TAS is cheating is completely ridiculous and profoundly misses the point of what TAS is even for.

You don't understand the difference between speedrun and TAS, do you?

It's a twitch link; I couldn't post the whole thing because 4chan thinks its spam.
I'd have to see what videos you're talking about to tell you for sure, but I'm guessing that what you are seeing are TAS videos,

>This run was done on an older version of Half-Life 2, more specifically, a build from 2006 that still ran on the original game engine (also known as the Old Engine), before being updated in 2010 to the OrangeBox engine.
Not impressed anymore. I thought speedrunning was taking a perfectly functional game and breaking it to degrees the devs couldn't have foreseen to achieve the fastest time possible. If you're going to pick a version of the game that's already busted, then what's the point?

going fast

What really is the downfall of Speedrunning is not the subject matter at hand but rather the baffling community who ruins it for the majority and is giving the whole thing a bad name. As it's always the case with such things.
Here an example, the pattern is always the same,

>watch a "glitchless" speedrun
>runner uses tons of obvious glitches/bugs/not intended routes
>runner gets called out
>says real glitchless runs aren't possible, deletes comments, making it sound like it's hopelessly arbitrary to define glitches/bugs/what's intentional, but a lot of games have pretty simple definitions
>also every glitchless thread at speeddemosarchive or any speedrun forum ever
>"IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY" i.e. tons of mind-boggling stupid anecdotes & analogies
>someone makes a reasonable comparison to real life sports which have time trials and how easy it would be to abuse loopholes there but there are rules in place to prevent that (athletics, motorsport etc.)
>autism overload

Yo, what the fuck is wrong with these people. Can't their autistic brains not comprehend that no glitches means no glitches.

There is actually nothing wrong with liking/watching speedruns. I've been following the scene since the very early Quake days. Recently there was the ESA (European Speedster Assembly) and those guys always do some show which they stream during huge LAN events like Dreamhack in Sweden. It's normal people doing their thing. No eDrama and the autism level is relatively low but that's also the reason people barely are aware of those guys and almost nobody cares compared to the North American scene and their eCelebs.

can we all agree that this run still has the best commentary ever?
